In what was probably an unwitting stroke of perfect timing, the Atlantic published an article claiming the Holy Rosary is an “extremist symbol” on the Vigil of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
An Extremist Weapon
In the article, author Daniel Panneton claims that Catholic traditionalists on an extremist fringe have taken the “spiritual notion” that the Rosary is a weapon and literalized it.
The implication is that, like the AR-15, the 15-decade Rosary could be a signal that a Catholic is stockpiling weapons, prepping for Doomsday, and plotting violent attacks on abortion facilities.
Panneton is no stranger to wide-ranging essays linking conservatives, Catholics, and Christians to violent anti-Christian movements, as in his May 2022 piece “The White Supremacist Past – and Present – of Canada’s Anti-Abortion Movement.”

As Skocpol put it in her Atlantic interview:
“Mastriano said it in so many words: ‘It’s a Christian country. That doesn’t mean we’ll throw out everybody else, but they’ve got to accept that we’re the ones setting the tone.’”
“Trump gave voice to that. He’s a perfect resonant instrument for that — because he’s a bundle of narcissistic resentments. But he’s no longer necessary … for an authoritarian movement to use the GOP to lock in minority rule..For St. Padre Pio, the Rosary was a "weapon" to be used only against spiritual enemies, not human opponents.
In the biography Padre Pio: The True Story by C. Bernard Ruffin, the author explains that, “the Rosary was his ‘habitual prayer’ and his ‘weapon’ against the powers of hell.”
Padre Pio prayed the Rosary every day and did so out of a love for the Blessed Mother. He also loved every human person and desired that they all would reach the eternal shores of Heaven.
However, he also firmly believed in the words of St. Paul to the Ephesians.

Padre Pio clearly prayed the Rosary as a “weapon” against the “evil spirits” in the world, who are “prowling around like a roaring lion looking for [someone] to devour.” (1 Peter 5:8)
Padre Pio was not advocating for a physical crusade, where the Rosary beads would be used as a weapon, nor was he desiring the death of his opponents.
He simply believed that there is a spiritual war going on in the world that is invisible to the eye and the Rosary is one of the most effective weapons against the demonic forces. [ link to aleteia.org (secure)] Susie
