AZ Governor Ducey is putting together billions in an emergency plan which includes discussion about constructing a pipeline to one of the major tributaries to the Mississippi River. The spectacular - in a negative sense - aspect of all this is that nobody thought about these things ever happening one day.

Here in Texas, water rights belong to the property owner !
That includes underground (Aquifer) water.
And NOBODY (even the Feds) can do anything about it !

The article covers different aspects of the unfolding water crisis in America's Southwest states. The Federal Government warned those states two months ago that they had 60 days to reach an agreement on sharing and cutting back on use of the Colorado River water system. No progress has been made. Several states had actually come to an agreement of sorts, but then California refused to participate on a water use reduction plan. Now the Feds are moving in and the states are looking at a possible 30% cut in water usage right out the gate. Farmers have taken the larger hit so far, but now the emphasis will be on residential cutbacks. More to read at the link.

I look forward to seeing what new and innovative way the feds find to fuck this up even more than it already is...

the technology has been around for decades to store water underground from the years of heavier rainfall/snow melt. They never did this.

when the turbines stop at the Hoover Dam.....this will be more than a discussion thread at GLP. If it happens during summer temps of 120 degrees/ 50 degrees C or so, thousands will behin dying almost immediately, you will not be able to pump petrol to even escape the place, property values.....there will be no property values. Then and only then, will people realise that they could have just flushed the toilet after every 10th p--s. No rocket science there. Desalination is very expensive and creates huge waste mounds. AZ Governor Ducey is going to have to push the proposal for a canal to the Mississippi River or one of its tributaries.

well, reality is beginning to take some bnig chunks out of the body politic here in Arizona. Lotsa lofty statements and it's true that widespread measures are being taken for residences and city governments to conserve water. BUT.....not a bloody word about the cotton and rice farmers, cattle ranchers, and the biggest - or at lelast the most shameless - gluttons of all, the Saudi alfalfa growers draining centuries-old aquifers for cattle herds back in Snackbar-land.

yeah the alfalfa rape of AZ's aquifers has another side-effect. By law, developers or homeowners must guarantee a 100-year water supply in order to sell the houses. Once that line has been crossed, the homes basically begin becoming worthless, minus some genius new water delivery method. There is coming a truly heart-and wallet-breaking development before long, when all those homes CANNOT be sold, for any price!

Have you seen how low the Mississippi River is now???

A pipeline or canal draining it further will not be the answer.

Sadly I agree with tptb on this.

It's time to face facts.

With 80% of the population GONE most of these "MODERN DAY" problems about resources VANISH.

And the sad part is I have children, grand children, and great grand children.

They will never know the life I had.

Buckle up.....
