Butch, I think it was an honest attempt by ignorant feds. But the populace really got into it with histeria and virtue signaling.

When I had my corporation we occasionally did unorthodox design techniques under the pressure of timetable deadlines to 'get er done'. Product Engineering vs DNA engineering, same thing, results in a faulty product. Chicoms posted the spike, I'll bet they thought nobody would be that stupid to use it. Phizer modded it and neutered it to make it safe, didn't work, tested it and it didn't work, but still used it. $$$$ not ideology.
