Honestly, ever since Fear and Loathing, he's just been playing a version of Hunter Thompson. And frankly, the pirates movies probably would have been a lot better with Hunter Thompson just running around getting high and making funny observations about the other pirates and the inevitable fall of piracy that was to come.

I didn't like the Whitey Bulger movie the first time I saw it...but seeing it again now on streaming a few times...Depp actually did a pretty good job. very different from other roles.
