Computer issues? AMA. I’m bored, and knowledgeable
I work remote and live full time RV. Always traveling but my job is constant. For about 15 years I’ve been solving IT issues. These days I am more into cloud computing, traffic shaping, virtual switching/routing but I still know how to fix a pc/Mac.

Anyone wanna try me ? I got time. And there are a lot
Of other smart people on this forum I hope will jump in. Let’s have it. What say you GLP? Tell us your issues

At home, my phone signal bar is just one or two, and the phone freezes up 6x a day and I have to restart it.

Out anywhere in a store the signal bar is max, but the phone still freezes sometimes. SAMSUNG, Xfinity, 10-mos. old.

Got a new Xfinity box 4-mos. ago, it is downstairs.

Thanks.

Freezing up indicates to me it could use a software update and or - go through and delete any apps you are not using (free up some memory). Samsung is also notorious for bloatware on top of android OS so like if you are using Samsung overlay active wallpapers or some crap like that (customized interface) it could be causing the freezes.

As far as one bar at home, I’d recommend a good repeater - be careful selecting one, first of all you want to make sure you know what channels your device uses be it Verizon, T-Mobile, what ever - read this article (second part dealing with android) [link to signalbooster.zendesk.com (secure)] You wanna find a GOOD repeater that can handle all the frequencies you use but you don’t really care about digital readout and stupid crap so you can find one with features you need but simple. You also want an app called open singnal which will show you the direction of your closest tower and you point the external directional antenna towards it. You want your internal antenna at least 30 feet away and ideally 10-15 feet lower than the external or they will cross talk. This will improve your reception at home. I have one on my camper

What type of MIDI interface is it an emulated serial interface (usb to 9 pin round) or direct USB ? In either case I suspect your baud rating and or various connection parameters need to be tweaked. I’d reinstall the driver for the interface device revert to default parameters and go from there.

Fascinating device ! I looked it up on Amazon. So it’s USB-C interface but I bet dollars to donughts on some layer it’s still emulating good old fashion serial. MIDI was originally designed for much lower bandwidth frankly they run show
Lights with it and DMX universes but at any rate another thing to consider is your sound card which I assume is still in charge of this on PCs. Macs are different with direct hardware access - a lot of musicians run Mac for that at vantage but in PC land it’s south bridge traffic so I would also make
Sure you have the best latest updates drivers for your sound card. It’s probably on board I know but if it’s a custom rig go find it from the board manufacture. If it’s a dell or what ever go to them get latest sound card driver.

Hey thanks for the input. I had a 6i6 that worked fine as well as older models but something about the 18i8 isn't recognized. I ran into a similar thing before once and it was a windows 10 thing. I had to go into the system
pretty deep and move my device up higher on some list because it only recognized the first ten slots. But I have no idea where I even was...

What’s your issue with 22.04 LTS ? Good choice btw. 18.04 was a hell of a learning curve with things like automated updates and netplan ;). Still tho awesome OS. Give me some syntax ?

Btw if you want an ALTERNATIVE (not sure why?) red hat (fedora) are moving to open source for consumer use. That’s why all support was suddenly terminated on CentOS. Early this year. The advantages you gain are subtle but you can apply things like 800-171 NIST and use rhel hardened packages including httpd and mariaDB for rapid deployment of hardened lamp servers. But then again Ubuntu is still the generally preferred flavor out there for general use not sure why you’d want an alternative….. you could install GenToo if you like and compile all your own drivers from scratch…. ?

Ok, this one is kind of stupid; don't tell me to put it back in the box.
Here's the first one; when my device fires up, it shows the picture and a place to sign in. It covers the lovely picture of the Holy Trinity which I have as my screen saver; the second time, I guess I sign in again, it's right on the part of Jesus Crucified. I'd like one or the other off to the side.

Yeah this really reeks of sound card - sadly even to this day PCs offload midi traffic to the sound bridge which is south bridge - remember way way WAY back like the sound blaster sound cards would have midi and SPDIF interfaces on them in a dedicated PCI bay ? That mentality never changed in PC land. Listen I am a Microsoft certified professional and I know wind blows inside and out but I run a mac outside of work for a plethora of reasons. Direct hardware access is one of them. You can do a few things here you can get an external sound card - ideally USB-c. But if all this machine does is this sort of work. I would keep your pc leave it as be, And buy a decent uses max air or low
End Mac Pro. Swear to God your gonna see night and day difference. I have a $5,000 M1 max Pro brand new max it eats PCs for breakfast. After disk encryption login it’s less than 5 seconds until usable desktop. That damn thing SCREAMS. It’s ARM based and unfair to compare in a number of
Ways but If you even bought like say- mid 2015 Mac air i5/i7 with usb-c. I’m telling you it would drive that thing like a champ. It’s not a pride thing - I make a living working on PCs. It’s a tool thing. The right tool for the right job. And I’d you look at any soundboard at any stage or any big mega church or anywhere you are dealing with a ton of audio….. your gonna see a Mac running the show. And there’s a reason for that. It’s called direct hardware access control. Software can directly access these kinds of components and that’s how you handle 128 Channels of digital audio in real time which a PC can’t draw
Of unless it has a kick ass audio card ton of Ram and high end board that can deal with the south bridge instruction set taking priority

You sound like a Mac user, or a pc user with bit locker. (Disk encryption). Very smart !!! ;). The first pic you see is rendered at a lower format because it’s a pre boot sequence meaning the operating system has not yet
Loaded only minimal drivers necessary to deal with unlocking the disk. This is part of UEFI boot sequence. Second time around the screen resolution is higher and so your picture changes slightly. Now it’s asking you to log
Into the Actual operating system - after unlocking the disk. The only fix I can suggest here is using a lower resolution picture that will render the same
In both circumstances say 1024x768

Try an external monitor and make sure it’s not your back light and or video card. It probably has an HDMI port - even a tv will work as a test.

I used to have to reboot my whole laptop every 6 months as it would slow down.

Since the last time I only installed security updates, and its been working fine for 18 months now.

You failed the challenge. The most common cause is that a file that is in use, like a log file, has been deleted while it is still open. Use lsof to identify the file. Fixing it may require bouncing the app that has the file open.

Hi. I dropped my laptop in the water when I was at the beach browsing my instagram. 5 hours later, at low tide, I found it partially buried in the sand.

Pressing F12 will show me an option to boot a drowned computer? (salt water). It seems there is some problem, considering all the sparks and smoke. Perhaps reformating...
