High school experiment to find the distance to the moon.
I found this basic experiment to verify the general distance (~350 KM) to the moon.

[link to www.scienceinschool.org (secure)]

This requires:

1. An antenna capable of being pointed at the Moon to convert the signal into radio waves, and vice versa.

2. A (VHF/UHF) radio transmitter/receiver to transmit the radio waves and receive the bounced waves from the Moon.

3. A dual-channel oscilloscope to show the time delay between transmitting and receiving the radio waves.

(Stating the obvious)
4. A clear night with a visible moon at max height.

While a high precision measurement of the mean Distance to the moon 238,855 miles (384400 km) was obtained by ground based radar empirically measured in the early 1960s (link below), there is nothing as believable as finding it yourself.

Note: EME (Earth Moon Earth) transmissions has been a topic among amateur HAM radio operators since the 1950's and still is today.

I see the Juan Star Flat Earthers have hit this thread.

For them it must suck to face the hard evidence that anybody can find.

Another simple experiment is triangulation or parallax. The moon diameter or distance can easily be found by simultaneously observing from multiple locations of a known distance. The further the distance the more accurate the calculation.

I'm firmly of the opinion at this point that 95% of FE types are just trolling for reactions. There might be a few who are genuinely suckered in and don't know any better, but I think that number is likely very, very small.

In 2016 as the election approached there were an increasing frequency of pro-FE threads. Happened again in 2018 and 2020.

Clearly an attempt to discredit this site an a source of alt info.

However, there is a surprising growth in the FES as the US educational standards have plummeted over the past several decades.

Showing a high school experiment and 1000s of amateur HAM radio operators verify the moon's distance might give FES members pause for thought and at minimum counter those dis-info tactics.

If you note the delay time average of 2.5 seconds and know light travels at 186,000 miles per second, then .....

2.5 X 186,000 = 465,000 miles round trip.

465,000 / 2 = 232,500 miles to the moon.

Again, 1000s of amateur HAM radio operators have done this.

When the moon is at it's highest point in the sky.

The perfect time would be a full moon at midnight on June 21st and as far south as you get in the US.

However, any place or time of year when the moon reaches it's peak height of the day will return a value 200k-300k mile distance.

Re: High school experiment to find the distance to the moon.
It would be an interesting experiment if I had the equipment or knew someone who did.

At this point in my life I don't believe anything that I cannot confirm for myself, including the numbers and "math" regarding astrophysics and the nature of the earth.

So far I cannot verify that the earth is a globe, I can verify that the predicted curvature over a 10 mile wide stretch of water on the horizon is non existent.

Does anyone have the necessary equipment in order to do this experiment? I would really like to see the results so I can analyze the data.

Forgive me for not simply and blindly accepting Wikipedia and other government sponsored sources at face value.

What if a ham radio operator reported different numbers than what are expected? Would I ever hear about it? Probably not.

Why are people so offended by people who are questioning the narrative?

Eric Dugay is clearly a disinfo agent but that doesn't mean we should throw the baby out with the bathwater.

Eric is the figurative bathwater and the legitimate scientists and other researchers who's work he stole and then made a mockery of represent the figurative baby.

Just as with the allegedly simple high school experiment what you are suggesting requires more than what is easily available to the average person.

I have a good camera with a good zoom. Whether zoomed in or not I cannot detect the predicted curvature or any curvature at all.

This is problematic to say the least. Over a 10 mile wide stretch there should be an approximate drop of 32 ft on either side of the center, it would be visible with the naked eye and measurable on a monitor, it is not.

I have seen so many fake and misrepresented photos such as the ones in your links that it only makes me more skeptical.

As far as the sunset being visible for a longer period of time from higher altitudes, this can be explained by the difference in the density of the atmosphere at different altitudes.

At lower elevations the air is more dense and will therefore obstruct light at a shorter distance than it would at a higher elevation.

There are not many globe arguments or evidences that do not have other possible explanations than the ones that are given by the scientific establishment.
