Re: Fix it Sunday... Master Mechanic, ask me anything!
A year ago the check engine light kept coming on in my 2007 Honda Odyssey.

I took it into the Honda dealer who gave me some bullshit about using cheap octane gas and it allowed carbon buildup in the engine and they said it needed to be scrubbed out. $1900 later and a few months go buy and check engine light on again. Same problem. Went to local auto shop and they hooked up their diagnostic tool and said it was carbon not firing and burning proper. Bought a $9 bottle of something to put in the gas.

Light turned off for a while and back on again now.

What Should I do? What could the real problem be?
 Quoting: An Uncarved Block

Hard to tell. Do you know what code it was throwing?

Hondas were notorious for blocking up the EGR passages with carbon. Then you'd have only one passage in operation and it would cause a misfire on that cylinder with surging and stumbling when the EGR came on during light cruise.

Battery giving 11.7 volts. Battery dies when driving. Alternator or Battery?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 40246196

Check your battery cables first. Corroded or coming apart under the insulation?

Otherwise, maybe the alternator.

I have an old lawnmower that I cannot get the screws off the carburetor to change carb out for a new one. I have soaked the screws in oil and left overnight, but they still wont They now have stripped phillips heads. How should I proceed? Should I cut the tops off? What is your suggestion?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 70232357

Phillips heads are perfect for drilling. You've already got a perfect centered divot. Make sure your drill is larger than the screw threads. All you need to do is get the head to pop off. then with the carb out of the way it's easy work with pliars or vice grips getting the screws out.
 Quoting: DieselTech

Could also try vise grips to remove the screws, with the head on. They usually aren't really that hard to turn but the screws are softer than the screw driver, so they strip easily.

My 2010 Ford Escape is leaking oil to the front left side, just inside of the front driver's side wheel. Any thoughts on causes/solutions before I take it to the shop? Thank you
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 82253669

The transmission is on that side of the vehicle. I believe that model had electric power steering, so it's important to identify what kind of oil is leaking. Engine? (amber or black) Transmission? (dark red) A/C oil? (bright green to amber)

Dealership changed my blinker fluid last week and rotated my muffler bearing. IT was kind of expensive, although every since then I get a slight whistle when driving. What could be going on?

Why do so many mechanic's "diagnose" your problem then supposedly "fix" the problem only to have them tell you....OOPS, that fix didn't work. Then they tell you it is this and charge even more money having performed work that did not need to be done in the first place? Why is this legal?
 Quoting: FeedYourHead

It's called shotgunning. Lazy mechanics do this when they don't diagnose the problem properly.

Don't get me wrong, I've had egg on my face a few times from a tricky problem but I don't lie about it, and if you're careful with the part and box most parts places don't give you a hard time if you "tried" the part out trying to get a car fixed.

I have a 2005 4runner. It has a vibration when going down the highway but vibration stops when you let off gas or put it in neutral. I have ruled out tires, wheels, bearings etc.

What do you think?

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 40246196

A good 12 volt lead acid car battery has 12.6 volts while the car is NOT running.

If the alternator isn't charging the battery, it will gradually lose voltage and the car will die when running. "Dies while driving" is the key here, it's the alternator

Re: Fix it Sunday... Master Mechanic, ask me anything!
I went to the Toyota dealer for scheduled maintenance a few weeks ago, which included tire rotation. The same day I got the car back the low tire pressure light came on. Even though they marked all tires at 32 psi one of them was 28. I inflated back to 32 but the light keeps coming on. BTW it's a 2005, it doesn't have the TPMS radio thingies. I don't know how it works, maybe counts the revolutions or something.

Any ideas? Could they have damaged something whilst rotating the tires?
 Quoting: Hoseman

I doubt they damaged them unless they took your tires off the rims.

Most TPMS systems only use 3 body sensors to detect the 4 tire sensors. They do this through triangulation. If a tire has a weak battery in a sensor and got moved to a farther point away from the receiver it might not be picking it up.

The Autel MX sensors are cheap and most shops have a tool that will program them. The tool can also diagnose the sensors on the car.

No. Well maybe. Warped rotors cause the vibration but if you also have loose tie rods it'll rattle like crazy on the brakes.

Question.. My conibler pin is lose and vibrating.

Also i have a MAJOR swell coming from my muffler bearing. Is there a grease fitting on it? My car is a 1973 Mustang . It has 1000 Miles on her. thanks for any info.

Also ,if you had a ford 1973 Australian 351 Cleavland .Bored out just 30 over . Block is half filled ( res-an) so she can take the slamming, It is stroked to 410. With scorpion rolling rockers along with ederbroke rolling lifters.Double timing chain. Custom cut cam . 3inch FULL length exhaust to the back after the custom built headman headers. TKO 600 5 speed with custom aluminum drive shavt with 411 rear end.
Actually if you did the math ford calls it 411 but not true.

electric Radiator and fuel pump. 950 cc Edelbroch Carb.
Hooked to a good old EDELBROCK torker ( not a torker two ) single platum.yes it was cut and polished as where the heads Australian (wedge chamber) Flow matched.
all aluminum pulleys and such. Along with 9mil wires and so on and so on.

She only pulls high 11's low 12's on the track and she also gets a bit hot when i take her for a ride around town do to the block being half filled which means leas water travel to cool the cylinder walls.

First question is how do i stop her from pulling the front right tire off the ground when i take off..I do have traction bars and custom sway bars front and back and i also welded frame connectors as my car was tweaking and cracking my windshield.

Last ,,,
my cigarette lighter fails to work.

thank you

Ok DT.

1997 Tahoe 2 door.

Blows like shit. Has a hard time cooling.

Cleaned out the evap under the dash. It did have alot of dirt and leaves but I got it out then hit it with coil cleaner. Helped airflow but its not as cold.

What can I do?

Should I replace the compressor? Condensor? Evac the system and refill it? Water in the freon?

Also, its a 2 door so no rear ac, would a compressor that is meant for rear ac have more oomph or is this me thinking stupid?

Ty.
 Quoting: Just Passing Through.....

Need to put a set of gauges on it. If the system had a leak and got fed a diet of diy refrigerant with the oil and sealant for a few years than the system could be flooded with oil or sealant. if it never had a vacuum put to it while filling it could be filled with non condensables.

There should only be refrigerant and the specified amount of oil. Anything else is taking up space and interfering with the operation of heat transfer.

Re: Fix it Sunday... Master Mechanic, ask me anything!
OP, I'm building a 396 with open chamber rectangular port heads, 11:1 compression , a 30/30 solid lifter cam and I want to know what rings to use; chrome moly or cast on a fresh bore +.30" over, and what the differences in the cross hatch for chrome vs cast - and if the ring end gap positions would be different or same for initial fire on assembly for either cast or chrome.

Thanks
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 83936664

Your best bet is to bring the pistons and rings to the machine shop with the block so the machinist can fit them properly, with the right finish.

I'd go with the chrome moly rings and insist on a torque plate used for final honing.

When lining up rings just kind of space the gaps out and don't put any ends on the thrust side.

Air conditioning can be a pain in the ass, if it doesn't help to replace the refrigerant and oil on older car , try to find a complete working air conditioner out of a wrecked car. People are looking for cheap ways out and this is it.
