Re: Fix it Sunday... Master Mechanic, ask me anything!
I have a 2008 chevy malibu 2.4 . I have no start condition with dash saying powersteering, traction control, service esc, low fuel(halftank in there). I have changed fuse box and then new pre programmed ECU and still not starting. I have tested starter, battery and connections to it,grounds, relays, fuses, fuel pump relay and fuel pump, my friend used his scanner and can system is working so is bcm. His snap on scanner had a u2105 code but my autel has u0100 coming up.i also tested all of the connectors for shorts cleaned them and put dielectric grease on them. I am so stumped with why the car isnt starting, the only thing I'm thinking now is the igntion switch but my mechanic buddy doesnt think it's that. I've been working on it for 2 weeks now and dont know what to do from here. I would appreciate your any input or suggestions. Thanks

Cranks over or no crank. I remember a friend had one of those cars, the red wire going to the fuse box for the power steering would cause issues. Also check the 40a fuse off the battery. Cam or crank sensor, transmission neutral switch
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 83978373

It does not crank, we checked the fuse on the fuse box and all connections but I'll recheck them, those sensors might be it is there a way to check them? although my friends scanner said the sensors were good.

I see what your problem is.
You have nowhere to stand inside your engine bay.
I put a short piece of 2X12 across the rails, after taking the radiator out.
Plenty of room now.

Anyway,
Also working on a 1982 C20 pickup, with a 1992 era 350 engine and manual transmission. Points ignition for a 2 BBL carburetor, no fuel injection and no computer.

While changing the timing chain, which had about an inch of play in it, I found a half-dollar sized coupon from one of the piston skirts laying in the bottom of the oil pan. The symptom it had was poor starts and excessive oil consumption. Pretty straight forward, pull the intake manifold off and pop out the damaged piston, to replace it.

My invisible procrastination assistant is supervising in the repair of this vehicle which broke down last August.

Since it's sat for a few months without an oil pan on it, should I put the oil pan on it and add oil before turning the engine enough to remove the piston? Or can I simply spray fogging oil onto everything exposed down there? Or does it really matter if I'm only turning the engine part-way by hand to get the piston out?

You DID NOT install a "new" ECU, you installed a junk ECU that has the same problems as the old one and was chemically cleaned to look new.

The new ecu I installed was from online which is tested and preprogrammed to my vehicle with the vin. The company is reputable but not perfect I dont think that's it. What would make you think that? The code went away briefly and now my scanner can read the can system now so the only thing I can thi k is that it wasnt programmed correctly.
Your BEST BET is to find a wrecked Malibu in the junk yard and snag the ECU out of it

Re: Fix it Sunday... Master Mechanic, ask me anything!
I have a dishwasher, a septic tank and a garbage disposal.

My dishwasher quit working, it is like there is no water in the dishwasher. I say that because if I put dishwasher soap in the bottom, it doesn't dissolve, but water come out when I run it, into the sink.

I emptied the septic tank, so that isn't a factor.

I have cleaned out the filter in the dishwasher and I have ran cleaner, i.e. water softener through the dishwasher a couple of times and also vinegar.

Dishwasher still doesn't work. Last clue, my sink with the garbage disposal will fill up like it is clogged, but if I turn on the garbage disposal, even for a split second, it clears quickly after that.

Any help would be appreciated.

I did change out the garbage disposal a few weeks before this happened, but the dishwasher did work after that.

procrastination?

more like

knowing the capability / limitations

like driving around on tires with 5% tread and cracked sidewalls

a mechanic knows how to drive that

I drove a car with a bagged CV joint for 5,000 miles

I concur with this!

I work 10-13 hrs a day as a facilities mechanic at a manufacturing facility. On any day I could be changing a faucet, or taking the entire head Mount off a massive screw compressor. Followed by maintaining my rental property, it’s hard to find the time(“motivation”) to do my own house.

I have a 2005 4runner. It has a vibration when going down the highway but vibration stops when you let off gas or put it in neutral. I have ruled out tires, wheels, bearings etc.

What do you think?

drive shaft joint/deformation or torque converter

Yes on the drive draft joint...get under truck and twist drive shaft back and forth...it should be tight...if you hear a clunk and there's any free-play then it's the Joint.

I have a 2005 Hummer H2 with 175k on it.

I've got coolant leaking into the engine and suspect it's a bad gasket or cracked head although I'm not sure.

Is it worth fixing or would you replace the engine?

Thanks!

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 40246196

It's the alternator but if you've been driving around with that battery dying then the battery is also fried now. Of course, if the battery is older than 4 years then you need to replace anyway.

I have an old lawnmower that I cannot get the screws off the carburetor to change carb out for a new one. I have soaked the screws in oil and left overnight, but they still wont They now have stripped phillips heads. How should I proceed? Should I cut the tops off? What is your suggestion?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 70232357

Phillips heads are perfect for drilling. You've already got a perfect centered divot. Make sure your drill is larger than the screw threads. All you need to do is get the head to pop off. then with the carb out of the way it's easy work with pliars or vice grips getting the screws out.

2000 Tahoe is throwing code. The second catalytic converter supposedly needs to be replaced. Is there an additive I can put in the gas to improve it so I don't have to replace it right now? It's my beater.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 80257640

Unless you have to pass inspection it can be ignored for a little while. you can also drill out a 14MM spark plug anti fouler with a 1/2 bit and screw the downstream O2 into that and put it into the pipe. It slows down the gasses and tricks the computer into thinking the cat is ok.

How does one fix the gas tank pressure?
When putting in gas it either stops or overflows.
 Quoting: 10822R88

Typically it's because the gas tank can't vent. There could be a problem with the filler neck, the combination valve in the tank or the charcoal canister is full of gas and the media is matted not allowing it to breathe.

Stop filling the car when the nozzle clicks off. compulsive clicking of the pump nozzle leads to introducing liquid fuel into the vapor part of the emission system and causes those sorts of problems.

Take the charcoal canister out and lay it in the sun. Then after a good heat soak, tap it and shake it up gently. Bang it around a little to get the pellets moving again. Compressed air works if you're careful with it.

Have a 2008 Mitsu Eclipse with transmission issue. Nephew was driving and the clutch pedal wouldn't lift off the floor after stopping at an intersection. He and a friend bled and re-tightened the cylinder. That got the pedal working again, but now the car won't go into reverse and is very hard to get into first. He claims he checked fluid levels and did the bleed properly, but I can't verify. He hasn't checked linkages because they are not visible without taking out the battery and battery shelf.

What do you think are the most likely causes of this? Was driving an shifting OK before this happened.
