And charging correctly check ac compressor for issues.

Put a generator in the bed of the truck and use it to run a battery charger. :) You can pretend you have a Tesla. :)

When your alt goes you know.
It gives warning signs...kinda different than your battery.

Starting...idling....etc.


You can HEAR...,when it goes...and feel it....before hand.

While running, place volt meter set to 20 vdc. Across battery terminals. Should display 14 vdc +_ a .5vdc. If so alternator charging. If below 12vdc not charging.

Then respect the professional, sit in the backseat, and be quiet...

There’s a good chance you’re right and it could be worn brushes or bad diodes in the alternator but do all the preliminary checks first. Did your dash light come on? Check your serpentine belt. Check your fuses and relays. Inspect your wiring. If you have a multimeter check the output on your alternator. See if it fluctuates. You can lightly tap on the alternator while charging to see if it causes fluctuations. Another poster was correct that if you don’t have enough voltage it won’t activate the AC. Sometimes an Auto parts store will tell you the Alternator tests fine but the Alternator is actually faulty. If it’s brushes the problem could be intermittent and cause a faulty test at the parts store. Drive it at your own risk but don’t use any accessories and keep your RPM’s up when you stop. You may need to charge it again at the parts store. You might as well have them load test your battery if they charge it. Good luck!

Inflate it to 85 psi and you’ll make it…

Don’t forget the blinker fluid

Also, they bench test alternators at the parts store so you’d have to pull it off and get a ride anyway.

No: if the alternator is putting out enough d.c.to charge the battery it's enough to run the computer, fuelpump/injectors and ignition.if you disconnect the positive terminal (after starting) and the vehicle dies...the alternator is not putting out.

If I should happen to break down, I'd just call the wrecker service I have used for over two decades...and they would drop the car off to another shop I had an account with, as I did all of their converters and any exhaust they couldn't do...and then they'd take me home...
