What!?! Idaho the potato capital of the world... is having potato shortages!

Boise State Public Radio pointed out that last year's potato crop cycle should last through August, though the lack of the starchy vegetable has already presented consumers with higher prices at the supermarket.

"There is not a gap. There are just less potatoes being shipped right now than there normally are this time of year because of the shorter supply that we started the season with," said Higham.

Another shortage that could potentially emerge is beer as northern Mexico runs out of water.

If you didn't know, Mexico is responsible for 76% of all the beer imported by the US last year (most of it's produced in the northern part of the country).

A few years ago, Apples were one of the top 3 crops in Idaho.

Yep, the drought in the Pacific Northwest [Wash. State and Idaho] was very bad last year [2021]. Many crops had very low yields and most were sold out by Dec 2021. Those contracts are pretty much delivered and into the markets at this point in time. No product to fill grocery shelves now until new crop becomes available.

Potatoes were not the only crop we didn't have enough of. Barley was also sold out by Dec 2021 and that included all the carryover from previous years. Spuds and Barley are coming into this crop year with virtually no carry over. What gets harvested in the next 2 months will be all we have going forward.

Idaho potatoes are grown in southern Idaho. Harvest should be taking place about now. So the potato shortage should not last for very long. A couple months I'd guess. About the time it takes to harvest, sell and transport the potatoes to processors and into grocery stores. I have no idea how the crop is looking at this point, but we've had ample moisture this year, so should be ok. So don't worry, you'll have more spuds soon from Idaho!

At the moment, barley fields are looking average. However, the PNW is running about 2 to 3 weeks behind the normal time of harvesting crops [Soft white wheat, barley, peas and chickpeas] due to the cold, wet spring we had. Winter varieties of soft white wheat that were seeded last fall [Oct/Nov 2021] look the best at the moment. Harvest is just starting this past week. The early [best] fields are yielding 110 bushels per acre, which is great. However, the spring planted varieties of wheat, and also barley, is rather a mixed bag. Some great fields, and some not to so great fields. Guessing, overall, both wheat & barley acreage will end of being 'average' which is ok. Pricing should hold up due to no carryover and weather related shortages elsewhere in USA and the World. Any excessive demand will drive up prices.

Peas and Chickpeas are ok, as far as I know. However, the Lentil crop in the PNW is toast. The wet, cold spring killed them off. So only place to get lentils is Canada and probably Turkey. Spain's crop is probably not great due to the drought there. So I'd advise buying all the lentils you need now as they will become more expensive going forward if you can even find them.

Remember from harvest to grocery store can take about 2 months.
