Around 1994 I was an aerospace engineer who often traveled to Los Alamos and Sandia.

The DoE labs led by Sandia began a “knowledge capture” program to preserve knowledge of nuclear designers.

We also used their software to capture knowledge of aerospace engineers. For example, my company made sats including the GPS. We were down to one senior engineer who had spent a career designing the battery systems for sats.

We captured his knowledge so that a green EE grad could design a battery system for a sat.

I have no personal knowledge of how successful the knowledge capture worked at Sandia.

The biggest problem is that the entire fedgov is thoroughly penetrated with enemy agents including the ones caught in “honey pots” and blackmailed.

The only truly secret tech is locked up in the Black World where even the Prez and SecDef do NOT have need to know.

I make highly complex tools for 3d software and without annotations and notes that I leave for myself... it can take me a bit to even figure out where I was if I open up a project from a few years ago.

Some of the breakthroughs we make are only because of a specific process that a few people figure out, and without them or their students... it's never going to be the same, or highly unlikely.

The skills that top-tier technicians bring to the table are nothing short of miraculous, in many cases... and without developing a pedagogical structure for passing those discoveries down through time... it becomes exponentially more unlikely that those successes will be repeated.

That's why people leave notes...

Plenty of times individual creations/formulas were lost - starlite being a near one only released/sold after the creators death for example - but that's a very different matter.

Well, most have retired and died.

The ones I know in there 40's in the 1990's at Pantex and other contractors, Los Alamos, LLNL etc have moved on.

If you are 40 in the mind 1990's add 25 years and that's .. if they are still alive.
