Sadly, I do not think that third parties will ever rise in this country, because our voting system is garbage.

There are countries that have adopted much better voting systems than ours that actually allow for third party victories. For example, under some voting systems you do not vote for a single party. Instead, you rank all of the choices from your favorite to your least favorite.

If your first choice does not win, then your vote is switched to your second choice, if that does not win, then your vote is switched to your third choice, and so on...

So, if I was given 4 choices, and I ranked them like this:
#1 Libertarian
#2 Republican
#3 Democrat
#4 Communist

Then my vote is counted as a libertarian vote at first. However, if the libertarians lose and it becomes a contest between republicans and democrats, then my vote switches and becomes a republican vote to keep the democrats out. If the republicans lose, then my vote switches to the democrats to keep my least favorite (open communists) out.

With a voting system like that, people can vote for third parties without feeling like they are flushing their vote down the toilet.
