I pledged a fraternity in 1980, and our “Hell Week” wasn’t bad at all. A bunch of mind games, and things we were told to bring to initiation which made us believe we were going to get some type of abuse, We had to take an exam from a large book about the history of the fraternity. It was structured so no-one could pass, but we’d come close to the 70% minimum. It was just a ruse to fuck with our heads. No physical abuse or forced drinking.

Now, at the same time, black fraternities were definitely physically hazing pledges, including using a branding iron to burn an Omega Greek letter onto their arms. This was back in 1980. The university never investigated any black fraternity, but would bust mostly white (we had black members in mine) for serving alcohol and not carding every person who came to one of our parties.

I think for most part, almost all physical hazing, has for the most part gone away. You do hear of a few cases each year of pledges dying from alcohol poisoning. But most of those, it wasn’t a forced thing. Many of these kids are thinking their so tough that the can drink a fifth of whisky or bourbon in a hour, as they think the are earning respect, but in reality, the other fraternity brothers do not condone such behavior. I remember a kid that pledged a year after me, and got so drunk he was puking all over himself. We all took turns watching him sleep so he wouldn’t lay on his back and choke on his vomit.
