Those people on Alone eat a lot of meat and almost starve to death, losing up to and over 50 pounds in 2 months.
Plus all the meat causes them lots of stomach issues and constipation problems. Full of parasites too that send them packing home.

The explorers had to have been trading with the native peoples.

Nor easy horses, a horseman.

If you think Lewis and Clark eating habits is the correct way of eating,
you should:

get camoflaghed
wait for days
prepare weapon
kill animal
sharpen knife
cut the head off
skin animal
gut animal
chop animal
haul animal
preserve animal
cook animal
clean the animal fat off cooking ware
deal with all the health issues of eating external sources of cholesterol
deal with occasional stomach ache and fever from rotten dead animal baterial overgrowth
repreat

if you are willing to go through this process,
then meat eating is ok
there is a natural limit of how much damage you can do to the environment.

Re: What did the Lewis & Clark Expedition eat on their two year journey?
meat eaters are archaic.

eating meat while there is unlimited food.

is like eating humans when there are animals.

yes people will eat humans when they are hungry

yes people will eat animals when their harvest fails

but to eat humans when there are animals
and to eat animals when there are bountiful harvest

is fucking barbaric.

Ya, like the lack of animal fats didn't lead to the downfall and morbid twisting of the Aztecs. Brilliant. Generational dumbing down until everyone is mumbling to 'gods' and doing mass sacrifice. Oh, but no wastage on 'holy days', everyone got pazole with the victims flesh. Woot! Idiot.

The bb gun is really a .46 cal air rifle
It was used to kill big game
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 83936250

I have all kinds of air rifles, but I would love to see and own one like that...
 Quoting: BRIEF

“The 51 caliber barrel is rifled with 12 grooves having one turn in the length of the barrel. The magazine has a capacity of 20 lead balls. Each air-rifleman in the Austrian Army carried two spare buttstock reservoirs and four refill tubes of rifle balls.”
 Quoting: A Jackson

Yeah, that's it...I knew I read about it somewhere, and the stock was the air tank...COOL!

you forgot Nemo (fish)
 Quoting: continuity

I almost did!
I even typed NEMO into the list
And then I chose Jabber Jaws instead.
Because Nemo is a clown fish found near coral reefs.
I wondered how many GLP'ers would recognize Jabber Jaws?

Jabber Jaws was a Saturday Morning cartoon character.
He's a shark.
On the Pacific Coast, it would be more likely
to catch a shark than a clown fish.
Plus, how much meat is on a single clown fish?
I think bluegills are a pain to clean and cook.

So, Jabber Jaws represents all fish.
People eat shark, especially in Asia.

As for the bear meat.
I wonder if there is more "strength and power"
in bear meat compared to deer meat (venison).
Maybe?
By eating the animal's flesh, do humans 'absorb' more
than the protein, fats, and minerals we know about?
Is the animal's 'spirit' in the flesh?
Native Americans certainly thought so.

What do you think?

The real answer is rabbits...They tossed them whole in the fire, and ate all the internal organs, as well as the meat, so as to not get protein poisoning...

Thanks BRIEF!

You've been a solid contributor to this Thread.

I found the POLL results interesting, do you?

Bambi (deer/venison) is far away the #1 choice.

-AND- Bugs (Bunny Rabbit) is second?
[I find that interesting]

Because the English Dairy Cow (Elsie) is far down the list.
[Nobody wants a beef burger?]

Big Bird (any bird, chicken, turkey, house sparrow)?
[Not much interest]

What can we draw from this data?

Oh...can't forget the 'Veggies' a primary purpose of this Thread.
They are in Third Place....
And as expected, MAD as HELL.
I guess I'm just BLOOD THIRSTY!

I'm buying quality canned meat now.
And beef Jerkey.
Canned fish.
Animal Protein.

Because that's what it takes to feed a population
who plan on resisting tyranny.
Not crickets and spiders.
The birds can eat them.
I'll eat the birds.

Lewis even had a B.B. Gun! Really!

 Quoting: ThirstyMarlin!

The Gerondani (spelling from memory) rifle was not a BB-gun. The thing scared Indians so badly that they left the expedition alone.
 Quoting: Icebear

Their air rifle was very powerful. Not a toy.
It could probably drop a deer.
 Quoting: Cheeseburgerandfries

The butt-stock was an air cannister. The thing was a repeating rifle, 40 or 45 caliber, good for ten or fifteen or maybe even 20 shots before it needed to be pumped up again, usually via a turnstyle pump being worked by donkeys

Re: What did the Lewis & Clark Expedition eat on their two year journey?
The men were literally starving to death by only eating meat

You need 30% protein
30% fat
30% carbohydrates for a survival diet
 Quoting: Justsayno

That isn't exactly correct.

The only macro you can't survive on for a long time is protein. You have to supplement with fat.

You can eat fat, which, yes, hard to so straight, but you can live for years on fat alone, if you eat nothing else. Without major health complications.

You can live on MAINLY fat and some protein.

You can live on all carbs FOR YEARS and still be healthy at the end.

Even high protein can more or less work, really.

Only straight protein, which normally comes packaged with fat in nature, is going to be a real problem.

Sure, sea men caught scurvy on long trips... But only after years of being at sea, only eating borgue* and fat. When some limes were added to their rations, they didn't get scurvy any longer. It didn't happen instantly, though. You can go years without supplemental vitamin C and be more or less fine.

Human beings can even go long periods of time with no food at all, and be relatively healthy, compared to other animals. We handle that situation differently than any other creature, except penguins.

They did eat a lot of meat on that expedition, but not because people back then hated greens or bread. They didn't know what the plants they could eat looked like, unless they were the same as back home...

So they ate things they were certain wouldn't kill them. Animals, for the most part.

Also, bear meat SUCKS. If someone claimed they wanted to eat bear, by preference, then that person is either a liar, or... No, they are lying. It's not a taste treat at all.

Bleh.

:)

*Borgu is the most common old time sea ration, and was basically finely milled oats, often served with a "treat" of a bit of fat on top, or at times a small ration of meat. Sailors would eat this twice a day, and also have a common ration of alcohol, which wasn't enough to get them drunk, but would be watered down, to give the water some flavor AND kill off any bacteria that might be in it.

TL;DR:

They ate meat because it was safe. They didn't eat plants because they didn't always know what they could eat. They weren't pussies who had to measure their dicks based on their diet, it was just what they knew they could get that wouldn't kill them.

They may have been hungry, but they knew to eat the whole rabbit, organs, skin, everything that didn't burn off in the fire...and that's enough fat, your liver will use protein to make the carbs you need...

Because Amazon sucks.
But I admit I still buy shit there.

I think the BIGGER question is....
Why has so much technology been SUPPRESSED???
WHY?

We had an electric car in the 1880's
and it was fast and could go a long distance.
Of course, on GLP we know why.
If you do...
You just might be a Fandango Ranger!
Ninja Ranger

P.S. I knew it was much more than a BB gun.
I wanted discussion, and that did it.
HOWEVER: WOW!
I did not realize the gun was THAT good.
Because of this Thread, I learned that.
Thank You GLP friends!
(How about that video from the Firearms/History Museum?)
I read "Undaunted Courage" years ago.
FANTASTIC READ!

Only fairly recently have powerful air-rifles been available.
