Yes, the IRS can arrest people with a warrant, or without a warrant. The Internal Revenue Manual, Part 9, Chapter 4, Section 12 extensively covers arrests.

According to 26 USC §7608, special agents have the statutory authority to execute and serve search warrants and arrest warrants, and serve subpoenas and summonses issued under authority of the United States.

As a former IRS tax auditor, the feds spent millions down sizing & closing offices & service centers and implementing AI to read taxpayer correspondence. IRS agents in the field were drastically reduced starting in the mid 80s into the 90s & post 911.

Nobody noticed when the IRS employees recvd "location pay" in 90s they began downsizing & consolidation of svc ctrs.

When you get a rep on the phone they're 9xs out of 10 not a federal employee.

Now they find a need to "hire" 87k employees??

why would an audit cost you anything as all they can do is review what you provided on your forms, unless you did not include all your w2 and 1099 income.

now if you have businesses and lots of stock or real estate i could see needing assistance if you have hired people to manage these things as you would not be intimately familiar with the details.

but i thought the issue was how it will hurt the middle class, which generally do not have complicated tax returns.


if you had a tax prep company they are on the hook for an audit to at least help correct a return unless it is show you supplied incomplete or false records.

investment and accountings firms have a fiduciary duty to provide accurate and legal services based on complete and accurate records.
