Re: Captain James Cook: The incredible true story of the World's Greatest Navigator and Cartographer
Born in a small farmhouse in what is now a sub district called Marton in Middlesbrough on the North East Coast of England
The Parrish Church of St Cuthberts in Ormesby another Sub district of Middlesbrough, where James Cook was babtised is where my mother and father were married as was my two sisters and 2 brothers and also where both my parents had their funeral blessings.

I lived in Ormesby all my young life up until l was 22 in 1983 and moved in with my partner of 39 years we lived in Cargo Fleet Lane Middlesbrough in 2014 we moved to Stanhope some 50 miles away a small village in County Durham.

The hospital in Middlesbrough is named after him The James Cook University Hospital Marton Road Middlesbrough is like a small town in itself in fact it covers more acreage than the village I live in.

Cargo Fleet Lane a wide single carriageway main road A174 was so named because there was a railway station not far from the River Tees where goods coming and going into Middlesbrough would be transported from Cargo Fleet Station up to Ormesby Bank on through to Stokesley North Yorkshire.

Middlesbrough did not exist until around 1830 up until then it was known as Port of Darlington the name Middlesbrough often miss spelt as MiddlesbOrough there being no "o" between the b and r as the earliest form of the name was Mydylesburgh meaning middle settlement as there was a Benedictine monastery on the South Bank of the River Tees a middle settlement between Whitby and Durham

Stewarts Park Middlesbrough is almost well it is next to where James Cook was born, his mam was from Thornaby on Tees now part of Stockton where the first ever railway in the world was laid between Stockton and Darlington 9 miles away
Jamie Bell from Billingham North of the River Tees
Roy Chubby Brown from Grangetown Chris Rea from Middlesbrough Italian father had a cafe and ice cream business Rea's Ices who competed with another local creamery Lannys Ices from Grangetown.
Guy Pearce who lived in Hartlepool part of Teesside until he was 4 Hartlepool the only Town in the UK to be bombarded by the German Imperial Navy. December 1914 [link to www.bbc.co.uk (secure)]
Hartlepool known as monkeyhangers because during the French Napoleonic wars a French ship was shipwrecked off the Coast and the only survivor was the ships pet monkey found washed ashore the locals who had never seen a monkey and thought the poor bugger was a French spy so hung him.
Middlesbrough was the first town in U.K.bombed by the Luftwaffe during WW2 the first German bomber bought down on English soil crashed just outside Whitby where James Cook sailed his ship the Endeavour
A model of which was proudly displayed in the Cleveland Centre for many many years
[link to www.gazettelive.co.uk (secure)]

Knew Roy Chubby Brown from Middlesbrough as my daughter taught him keep fit and Roy was eager to film a rude tongue-in-cheek keep fit video featuring my partner Denise who was also a fitness instructor who Roy Knew also and also very well known on Teesside he put it to Sony Pictures who he was signed too but they were not too keen, And Lee Duffy went to school with my cousin and were friends in school but obviously took different paths upon leaving school and Stewarts Park still has chipmunks peacocks in fact a mini zoo of various animals

I served my apprenticeship as a mechanical fitter at I.C.I. Wilton 1977 1982 spent 3 more years then worked at BSC Lackenby Atlantic Engineering Lia Berg Engineering finished my career at Kenmore Crook County Durham after an industrial injury disabled me

I lived near Yarm as a child and had a couple of happy visits to the Captain Cook Birthplace Museum. I first went just after it opened in 1978 and returned a few weeks later as I enjoyed it so much. I remember chipmunks being in the park nearby but I might be imagining that! My family moved away from the area in late November 78 and I felt sad that I would never get to visit again.
