Re: Have you gone off of statins? If so, please come on in, I've some questions
My mom was on statins for years. I always told her to get off of them, but she had a bi-pass and her surgeon said she had to be on them life long, too.
Then, we all got covid last Feb. My mom's turned into covid pneumonia and she passed away. My daughter in law is an ICU nurse and she told me that they see so many people on statins that come in with covid, and the nurses know they wont be going home.
I am a firm believer that we are SUPPOSED to have higher cholesterol as we age. Study on that yourself.

Yeah, I posted about that in my second post, because my guidance kinda tried to share that info with me. My guidance is never wrong, heh.

Re: Have you gone off of statins? If so, please come on in, I've some questions
I was put on Simvastatin and I took them for 30 days and quit cold turkey.

I used to have absurdly strong legs. I could be sitting on the floor cross legged and just twitch my quads and launch myself a foot about a foot above a standing position. Leg presses with the full amount on the machine, plus a person standing on the weight stack.

After 30 days of that poison, I could barely walk up the stairs.

Then later I read all the other bad stuff it does. It will cause Alzheimers for example. And it will wipe out your kidneys I think it was. would have to look. Basically, all that muscle tissue that it destroyed hits your kidneys and overloads them.

The body need cholesterol to keep the brain healthy and to repair blood vessel damage.

Re: Have you gone off of statins? If so, please come on in, I've some questions
I found some calculations on my old labs and notes that may be helpful if you have access to your lab results:

HDL/Total Cholesterol
x 100 = ?
Should be 24% +

Triglyceride/HDL = ?
Should be -2

Notes to ponder:
LDL = "Low density lipoprotein" = "bad"
HDL = "High density lipoprotein" = "healthy"
VLDL = "very low density lipoprotein"

~Need to preserve HDL

~Low levels of HDL are much more predictive of heart disease than high levels of LDL

~Cholesterol is used by the body in cellular repair in cell walls and also used to make certain hormones.

~VLDL increases in response to fasting!! (Can anyone confirm this?!)

~80% of the cholesterol in our blood is generated by the liver

~Niacin is effective at reducing triglycerides but fails to reduce heart disease. Niacin increases HDL.

I don't have my latest lab results, but I'll check it out the next time I get lab work done. Thank you so much for all your help, lovey....send

Re: Have you gone off of statins? If so, please come on in, I've some questions
Lovey, I was in the cath lab. They went INTO my heart to check the arteries. I have one tiny artery 50% occluded, and the rest are clear and good. They couldn't stent the artery, because it has to be 75% occluded before they'll do that....got dammit.

Heh, I sat and argued with my cardio PA about me wanting a stent, and her telling me I don't want a stent. Back and forth we went. I'd rather they put one in, than wait to have another heart attack....although it probably wouldn't be as bad as the other one. My main artery was 100% occluded....it was really bad, lol.
Quoting: cosmicgypsy

Yikes okay, sorry about that...sounds scary. Well please ask the heart doc what they think about the niacin then. I would not want you to over do it, though with niacin, that may not even be possible, but I can't say for sure.

I've looked it up, and it's not permanent muscle loss, so that's good....whew

Congratulations on making the decision to get off statins!! Your health will thank you! :) You may be interested in this long-term 20 year study on statin use in heart failure patients and the surprising results:

The results of the study were - "Patients with the highest baseline LDL-c levels had significantly improved outcome, whereas those with the lowest LDL-c levels had the highest mortality. This paradoxical effect was prominent in patients <70 years old. The negative association of LDL-c levels and mortality was most conspicuous among the HF patients who were treated with statins."

Hello cosmic,
I had a heart attack a month ago and a stent put in right artery due to 95%.blockage.
I just stopped statins so I will update how I feel as I have achy muscles and tired , headaches. I just feel I should be getting better n stronger not new problems.
I have a question- does one have to have another angiogram in a year or so? Just curious as to why you had another it sounds like a check up or follow up.
No way am I ever going back to the hospital here and having that done again.

Statins gave me cramps in my calves something terrible.
Stopped taking them. Just daily baby aspirin.
I cut carbs to near nothing and went from 225 to 190.
HDL could be better though. I dont know how it works exactly but it has something to do with insulin spikes.

What are you doing having a massive heart attack with 4 cleared arteries and one only 50% blocked? was it #3?

Anyway, all heart meds suck. Wanna get off of them? Stop eating meat. In 8 months everything should be back to youth levels.

Myself my Cholesterol is around 100, bp excellent. Im over 50. I dont drink or smoke.

As for Cholesterol tests, the numbers change every few days. Get tested the day before and the day after thanksgiving see a 100 point difference. <think>

Drop the meat, dairy and eggs. Wheat is also garbage.

Re: Have you gone off of statins? If so, please come on in, I've some questions
I was on rosuvastatin for a little over a year before its effects became apparent. Sore joints that were slowly crippling me. Muscle loss even though I was routinely lifting weights. Forgetfullness. Sore back and neck. I could barely move. I was also finding it hard to speak properly, like I knew what I wanted to say but the words came out wrong, like I was drunk. Tingling in my feet and hands constantly and tinnitus.

I quit them one day and within a week my joints, back and neck stopped aching. My memory slowly started returning and my ability to properly talk returned. In a few months I started gaining strength back with continued weight lifting. The tingling extremities went away and the tinnitus is practically gone but not completely.

They're poison. The only thing they do is lower LDL. They destroy everything else.

Re: Have you gone off of statins? If so, please come on in, I've some questions
I just found out today that one of the side effects of taking statins is muscle mass loss....heh, and I have been wondering for over a half a year why my muscle mass has significantly reduced.

Now, my cardio PA - a lovely lady - has told me I'll be on statins the rest of my life, that I could possibly get off of the BP med, but not the statin.

Now that I have a good idea of why I've had this muscle loss, I'm going off of it....fuck me, it's making me physically weak, and I can't have that.

And I don't doubt it's due to the statins, because looking back I can certainly see the correlational between beginning the statin, and the onset of the muscle loss.

Lawdy, and my simvastatin dose was recently increased, too....gaah

I made an appt today to see my cardio PA about going off of it, but I know a bit of a fight is going to happen. She and I have already discussed it. She's insistent I'm going to be on it the rest of my life. I'm hoping youse guyses can give me some answers, and I can avoid a confrontation with her.

So, my questions are--

Is this a drug I should cut back on slowly, over time? Or can I just stop it cold turkey?

I don't want to throw my body into any kind of a crisis.

If you've taken statins, has it reduced your muscle mass?

If you went off the statins, were you able to rebuild the muscles?.....it's not a permanent thing, right?

And please don't rip me a new asshole for even starting to take it. I was told to take them for a long time, but refused, until I had a massive heart attack, and then I coalesced. The heart attack scared the pee welling hell right outta me.

Also so you know, I did recently have a full and complete cardio workup done, including being in the cath lab. My heart is good to go. I have only one tiny artery that is 50% occluded, the stent that was put in with the heart attack is in perfect condition, and all the rest of my arteries are open and running freely.

BECAUSE my last blood test showed my cholesterol had risen, I'm questioning exactly what roll cholesterol has in clogging arteries....heh, it sure seems to me that they'd be in a lot worse shape than they are, given my cholesterol increase was shocking enough to raise the dose, eh?

Thank you for any responses....and yes, I know when a post is genuine or not, so don't no one have a concern about that, okay?
Quoting: cosmicgypsy

Yeah, I took Atorvastatin for about 8 yrs and was also told by prescribing doc it was for life. I too developed very painful neuropathy in both hands & feet. Moved after taking for 7 yrs, so new doctor. She said Statins were not meant to be taken for life, only temp taken, was only temp tool to aide me in correcting the problem. She refused to refill it because I would not visit her office after covid started.
After 2 missed appointments, she told me all this, and said she would not refill anymore unless I visit her. Before I'd moved, other doctor forgot to renew the atorvastatin twice while seeing him; 1st time it was just short of 1 month before med was avail for me. 2nd time, it was about 4 months! Had to wonder then if the whole 'having to take it the rest of your life' thing was really a lie. Then when new doc refused to fill it without office visit; I haven't taken it since then (May 2021). the painful neuropathy however, I still now have, and most likely will, for life.

Refused vax, and have no trust in doc's anymore; Don't see myself ever 'visiting' one again. My mom gets angry when I say this - but it's true.

My own experience.

Here's a staggering statistic: According to the CDC around 655,000 Americans die of heart disease EVERY YEAR – and it’s been that way for the last 80 years.
But my guest says the scariest part is this:
Most of the common "fixes" out there, like maintaining low cholesterol levels and taking preventative medicine may NOT be helping... In fact, he believes these recommendations are often doing more harm than good. And if you've read my work, you know - my guest and I are on the same page.
I'm joined by Jonny Bowden, aka the "nutrition myth buster," and he’s a board-certified nutritionist and expert on diet and weight loss. He recently re-launched his bestselling book, The Great Cholesterol Myth, Revised and Expanded: Why Lowering Your Cholesterol Won’t Prevent Heart Disease – And The Statin-Free Plan That Will. On this episode, Jonny and I reveal the TRUTH about cholesterol, expose the REAL villain when it comes to heart disease, and share what you can do TODAY to optimize your health and support a healthy heart.

On this episode you’ll learn:
Why standard cholesterol tests can have almost ZERO indication on your health – and the much more accurate test you should ask your doctor about (this could save a life!) (2:00)
The cholesterol LIE most people have believed for years – and what you NEED to know about cholesterol and your health (4:30)
The surprising truth about statin drugs – and the heart health plan I try first with most patients (ask your doctor if it might work for you) (9:00)
The #1 driver of heart disease (and almost ALL other serious illness) – and how avoiding it may help you live a longer, healthier life (17:00)

smoking is worse than any statin, have you considered doing some research on what cigarettes do to your health instead?

I am not a doctor and this is NOT medical advice but statins are pure bullshit. Another petrochemical to treat a symptom with side effects almost as bad as what they claim it cures or prevents. They told me over 10years ago I would "need to take them for the rest of my life" and yet here I am, stopped them after less than a week, they made me feel like dogshit.

Cholesterol? Change your diet. Reduce artificial fats and oils, fried foods and dairy and get some light to moderate exercise. Work up from there if you wish over time.

This worked for me.

Bloodpressure? Same as above but additionally make an effort to lose weight.

Clot prevention? Baby (75mg) aspirin once or twice a day, garlic & omega3 supps and or in your diet.

The word PHARMAKEIA is a Greek word used in the Bible.

PHARMAKIA in the Bible means sorcery. Our word "pharmacy" is derived from PHARMAKEIA.

There's a book out there called "The Cholesterol Myth" can't remember who wrote it. It's a small book full of info, essentially it states we need cholesterol for our bodies and brains to function, and that it is inflammation that causes heart issues. Check out the book, written by an old school doc, it kept my husband off the statins, thank God!

I was put on crestor about a year and a half ago. I started having crippling muscle pain...I literally could not walk. I took myself off of the crestor and started having those side effects diminish. Now, after a few months, I am almost back to normal. DO NOT TAKE THESE MEDS!

edit to add my supplements that helped bigly.

omega 3 fish oil, red yeast rice, a baby aspirin, and tumeric.

How high is your cholestrol? There3 are several statins, I had problems till they put me on Crestor, been years now and all is good.
The others all made my legs sore all the time.
If your not over 300 i wouldnt even take them. Without my cholesterol shoots up to around 500
Doesnt matter what I eat, ive even gone vegan and it stays this high. Some people just over produce it.
