Hippos are murder incarnate. They're much faster than they look, powerful and aggressively territorial. Very few animals would ever dare mess with one.

They can hide underwater too. There's been cases of people accidentally sailing over a hippo herd who then surface, capsize the boat and murder everyone on board.
