For example, no major label could have made Katy Perry's first album a success. The reasons for her success went a lot deeper than signing a contract, and I think the reasons are along the lines of the following post. I've played music my whole life. I can say with a certainty... it does not matter how talented you are, if your not willing to help promote "the system" then your not gonna have commercial success. I think that's what it means when you "sell your soul" And whether it's subtle or subliminal and never really spoken aloud, artists know in there spirit what they're doing. I've been at the "crossroads" many times. Nobody comes to you and says, " promote the script" or "sell your soul" but I assure you everyone in music, film, or Art all "know". Even during song writing sessions or just jamming in Nashville it starts coming out of you, even tho you don't agree with it! Almost like just being in a city like Nashville causes you to take the "download" But make no mistake, everyone there "knows" but you don't talk about it.
