As early as the 3rd century B.C. the ancient Greek scientist Eratosthenes of Cyren (c. 276-194 B.C.) not only firmly knew that the Earth was a sphere, but he also managed to measure the radius of the Earth, obtaining a value of 6311 km - with an error of no more than 1 percent!


Around 250 B.C., the Greek scientist Eratosthenes first measured the globe fairly accurately. Eratosthenes lived in Egypt in the city of Alexandria. He guessed to compare the height of the Sun (or its angular distance from a point overhead, the zenith, which is called the zenith distance) at the same point in time in two cities - Alexandria (in northern Egypt) and Siena (now Aswan, in southern Egypt). Eratosthenes knew that on the day of the summer solstice (June 22) the Sun at noon illuminates the bottom of deep wells. Consequently, at this time the Sun is at its zenith. But in Alexandria at this time the Sun is not in the zenith, but away from it by 7.2°.

Eratosthenes obtained this result by changing the zenith distance of the Sun using his uncomplicated anglometric instrument, the scaphis. This is simply a vertical pole - gnomon, attached to the bottom of a bowl (hemisphere). Scaphis is set so that the gnomon takes strictly vertical position (directed to the zenith) The pole illuminated by the sun casts a shadow on the inner surface of the scaphis divided into degrees.

So at noon on June 22 in Siena the gnomon does not cast a shadow (the sun is in the zenith, its zenith distance is 0°), and in Alexandria the shadow of the gnomon, as seen on the scaphis scale, marked a division of 7.2°. In Eratosthenes' time, the distance from Alexandria to Siena was considered equal to 5000 Greek stadia (about 800 km). Knowing all this, Eratosthenes compared the arc of 7,2° with the entire circumference of 360° degrees, and the distance of 5000 stadia - with the entire circumference of the globe (denote it by the letter X) in kilometers. Then from the proportion it turns out that X = 250,000 stadia, or about 40,000 km (imagine that it is!).

If you know that the length of a circle is 2πR, where R is the radius of a circle (and π ~ 3.14), knowing the length of the circumference of the globe, it is easy to find its radius (R):

Remarkably, Eratosthenes managed to measure the Earth very accurately (after all, even today it is believed that the average radius of the Earth is 6371 km!).

And a hundred years before him, Aristotle (384-322 BC) gave three classical proofs of the spherical shape of the Earth.

First, during lunar eclipses, the edge of the shadow cast by the Earth on the Moon is always an arc of a circle, and the only body capable of giving such a shadow at any position and direction of the light source is a sphere.

Secondly, the ships, moving away in the sea from the observer, do not gradually lose sight of themselves due to the distant distance, but almost instantly as if "sinking", disappearing behind the horizon line.

And, thirdly, some stars can only be seen from certain parts of the Earth, and for other observers they are never visible.

But even Aristotle was not the discoverer of the spherical shape of the Earth; he only provided irrefutable proof of a fact which had already been known to Pythagoras of Samos (about 560-480 BC). Pythagoras himself may have relied on the testimony not of a scholar, but of a simple sailor, Scylacus of Cariades, who in 515 BC made a description of his voyages around the Mediterranean.

It is probably worth noting another point, the fact that the figure of the Earth is different from a sphere.

Scientists began to guess about this back in the 18th century, but it was difficult to figure out what the Earth is really like - whether it is compressed at the poles or at the equator. To figure it out, the French Academy of Sciences had to equip two expeditions. In 1735, one of them went to Peru to carry out astronomical and geodesic work and was engaged in it in the equatorial region of the Earth about 10 years, and the other, Lapland, worked in 1736-1737 years near the Arctic Circle. As a result it was found out that the length of an arch of one degree of a meridian is unequal at the poles of the Earth and at its equator. The degree of a meridian has appeared at the equator longer, than at high latitudes (111.9 km and 110.6 km). So can be only if the Earth is compressed at the poles and is not a ball, and the body is close to the form of a spheroid. The spheroid has a polar radius less than the equatorial one (the Earth's spheroid has a polar radius shorter than the equatorial one by almost 21 km).


It is useful to know that the great Isaac Newton (1643-1727) anticipated the results of expeditions: he drew the correct conclusion that the Earth is compressed, therefore our planet rotates around its axis. In general, the faster the planet rotates, the greater must be its compression. Therefore, for example, the compression of Jupiter is greater than that of the Earth (Jupiter manages to make a revolution around its axis in relation to the stars in 9 h 50 min, while the Earth only in 23 h 56 min).

And so there was a general flood." Some linguists suspect that, in fact, sea animals had nothing to do with it, but it was about fixing the Earth along its four edges, because in the ancient Slavic language the root "whale" meant "edge." In this case, we are back to Kosma Indikoplov, whose curious book about the rectangular Earth was very popular in Russia among the common people.

The oceans. It's not distortion of light on the horizon, it's the water curving. You can physically see it just standing on a beach. Or even in the air on a plane.

When you're sailing out at sea and you approach land you can see the land slowly rise up over the horizon. It doesn't appear all at once. That's you traveling on a curve.

The curve is extremely subtle because we're very tiny and the Earth is very large. So to our scale everything just feels flat no matter where you are.

There is no such thing as flat Earth. Not one shred of evidence has ever indicated it, but there's a mountain of proof and common sense that it's obviously a sphere. You can even buy a standard telescope and visibly see the other planets, which are also spheres. You don't need NASA to verify that. Nor has anyone ever found a hardline edge dropping off Earth.

But why do people even want to believe it's flat? What's there to gain from it? What's so wrong with the idea of a spherical planet that you prefer it to be flat?
