Pierre Clostermann, "The Big Show". An epic book worth reading. Somewhere he is debating this topic and and tactics about how to shoot down the Me-262 jet planes. |

The Luftwaffe's wonder weapon that was the Me-262 fought against the allies pinnacle of propellor driven technology, the P-51D Mustang. Describing the battle in the words of a Luftwaffe pilot shows that it was a very close fight. Here is an example of prop vs jet from a 262 pilot for the thread. Running towards the weekend. |

Yeap, Didn't he have excellent and I mean excellent eye sight something like 20/10 ? Many of the 262's were shot down on their landing approaching where they were very vulnerable. Many of the 262's were shot down on their landing approaching where they were very vulnerable. For sure not every German pilot was an Ace and there was a learning curve with a brand new aircraft. A big problem was that they were too fast for dogfighting. They should really have been fitted with airbrakes so they could drop speed quickly and outturn the P 51. But this was wartime and for whatever reason, they went without. However, the best German pilots could reduce speed by pulling up out of a dive and take on the P 51. With some success in quite a few cases. The pilots, in particular, the inexperienced ones were to go into a steep dive and show a clean pair of heels to the Mustang, which they could easily do because they were over a hundred mph faster But all this misses the point, because standing orders were not to tangle with 'low value' targets like the P 51. They were there to destroy the B 17s which they were superbly equipped to do. A favorite tactic was to just dive through the fighter cover and the bombers then pulled up below them and approached from the side where the B 17s presented a nice wide profile and the (very short) engagement time was a little longer than when approaching head on, and less defensive fire could be brought to bear. They were too fast, it took 4 seconds for a gunner to aim and fire off an accurate burst, they only had two seconds. In fact that was a problem for the Me 262 pilots as well, but the 24 R4M Rockets filled with 520g of HTA 41/HTA 15 (torpex) meant that very, very few of the B 17s on the receiving end of that lived to fight another day. The 4 x 30mm Cannon in the nose automatically fired off a few rounds each at the same time, assuming that they were all functioning. These shells were much more powerful than anything in the 20mm range. Yes the P 51s and other fighters did at one time take a heavy toll of the Me 262s when they were taking off and landing, but the two-fold answer was 1..."Flack Alley" which consisted of 150 or so quad 40mm Bofors AA guns lining the landing and take off approaches. 2...Swarms of FW 190s and Me 109s waiting to tangle with them |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 83894574 Actually you forgot to capitalise it, it's Messerschmitt. But yeah people don't like the added difficulty of typing out foreign words. Besides Me 109 is a standard abbreviation, just like Yak-9 is for the Yakovlev Yak-9. |

Had they employed it as a fighter exclusively it could have entered the war a year earlier and made an actual difference in the outcome. It probably would have shot down the b17's and thus my wife would have never been born. Her dad was a ball turret gunner - easy job, glory position. :p Gen. John B Gordon and Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest were the finest citizen-soldiers birthed in America. |

I'd reckon that they probably cost a small fortune to build. |
