I remember surfing a 35 foot wave just north of Ventura (1980s), as houses along the Rincon Parkway were being destroyed by the surf.

I decided to get out of the surf when I nearly got caught up in a tree, with roots and all, that had been torn away from the shoreline.

I was the only surfer out, and someone reported me, because there was an emergency vehicle watching me. The emergency truck left when I got out of the surf.

There's nothing like being on a 35 foot wave. The face of the wave is so massive you don't know what to do with it all. I just did large sweeping turns.

I started paddling out at Faria Park, and by the time I got out to the breakers I was a quarter mile down the point break, almost to Mondos Indicators (bay). Getting into just the right spot to catch a 35 foot wave is difficult. Today they use skidoos to tow the surfers into large waves like that. I was riding a 6' 8" William Dennis round pin with soft rails, and a think deck. It had plenty of buoyancy to paddle fast, perfect for massive waves.

So fun.

I hope to never know.

Maybe big waves in Hawaii have the same meaning.

Or maybe it will be a washout.

In terms of your Hawaii experience -- Kona/West side of the Big Island is lovely, but West side of Maui is the best.

Kauai is nice, but kind of remote.

Oahu is crowded and commercial.

If you only travel to Hawaii once, Kihei/Wailea on Maui is the place to go.

That said -- man, those waves on Kona were something!! Small tsunami??

Most of those vids aren’t even double overhead.

The solution is to travel to Hawaii more than once.
