I totally like her ideas and recipes. She is a millionaire but she isn't a millionaire born with a silver spoon in her mouth. She worked hard to save and invest and lived below her means so that she could save money. I like it when someone outsmarts the ad agencies and doesn't buy crap he/she doesn't need.

Definitely worth a subscribe if you want some clever ideas on saving money. She thinks outside the box.

Re: How To Live On $30 A Week (for food)
It's literally cheaper to eat at McDonalds through their app deals, than it is to buy groceries. I know I'm eating garbage, but McDouble and Small fry for $2 cannot be beat. My meals up until a while ago were topped at $5, anything else seemed like a ripoff. Now you can't get anything for less than $8-10.

I buy very little in groceries, I probably spend more on feeding my dog than I do myself. I make good money but I'm trying to get back on my feet with school loans and med bills weighing me down. I cannot understand how anyone earning less than $15/hr gets by and back when my life was fubar, I used to literally collect pennies and dimes until I could afford something to eat.

Bwahahahaha

I burn that amount of calories before breakfast.

On my 10 mile runs I burn about 1200 calories in the hour and a half it takes me to run it.

Factor in some mornings where I follow my runs with jump burpees and pushup/pullups and I need that just for breakfast.

Then I go work climbing trees all day....

I consume about 4-4500 calories a day and still sometimes go to bed a little hungry.

If there's a famine, I'm in deep doo-doo.

Maybe I'll be like AJ a d go eat my neighbors....

What is so Larpy about running and working out?

I climb trees for a living. I have to be able to easily lug myself and about 60lbs of rope, chainsaws, and harness up trees all day.

I have 4 active kids and a wife that likes to go out and do things.

I have animals. I have a big garden.

Running and working out is actually easy compared to any of my normal daily duties at work or at home.

Besides, you have to at keast burn about 3k calories yourself just in posting memes and responses on GLP. You are everywhere.

Eat in a Cuban restaurant

Inexpensive and it fills you up

You won't be hungry hours later because the food is very filing

Also 12" sandwiches, find an inexpensive place

$30 a week is not enough, I would suggest finding a part time job or going to a food pantry or Salvation Army that gives out free lunches

If they are running anyway, you are just using them more efficiently. Half full freezers work harder. When ours are low, we put gallon jugs of water in there.

Of course this is assuming most people have at least one fridge in their home.

Re: How To Live On $30 A Week (for food)
I grew up in my grandparents house back in the 80s. They were children of sharecroppers during the depression.

Most of the food I ate came from the family farm, though by the time I came along they'd stopped bothering with the milk cow, churning butter, and I only remember one hog butchering.

Beans, fried taters, and corn bread was eaten for lunch and supper twice a week.

Hamburger soup and corn bread was another weekly meal. And there needn't be much hamburger meat at all. A half pound is enough for a big pot.

Another favorite was chicken and rice made with cream of mushroom.

Invariably the next day, using chicken leftovers, we had chicken and dumplings.

Sometimes we'd get sour kraut and fried baloney. I love both.

There were many other variations, most including beans or taters. It just depended on the season.

During Winter and Spring we ate more meat.

But beans, corn bread and taters if well prepared are some damn fine eating and as cheap as anything.

Breakfast? Most days was oatmeal or pancakes and a single slice of sausage or bacon and eggs. As a family farm eggs were always plentiful except in Winter.

She wouldn't go to a food pantry or go for free lunches for the poor. She's a millionaire from a lifetime of being frugal. She's saving money because she doesn't want lots of possessions, and she's cooking at home because she doesn't want to give up her hard earned cash. $30 is ample for her.

A small (3 cubic foot) stand-alone freezer uses about $25 worth of electricity a year. Absolute bargain. Buy meat on sale. Get a vacuum sealer and stuff will last several years without freezer burn.

Re: How To Live On $30 A Week (for food)
If you want to eat well on $30/week, take advantage of food banks, especially for bulk staples and canned goods. That will free up your grocery money for more meat, and other items that add variety and improve nutrition.

I used to volunteer at a food bank, and signed myself up as a client when I saw how much food was actually available. So many clients didn't want dry, bulk staples—for a variety of reasons, they wanted a lot of readymade, heat-and-eat foods, or those that required minimal preparation. So I never bought beans (dry or canned), long-grain rice, pasta, canned tomatoes, potatoes, or onions during my time there. Sometimes, I took home huge boxes of really nice produce that was just going to go bad because there weren't enough clients who wanted it. I also took meat, cheese, and eggs, too, when there was an excess of it.

As a volunteer, I wasn't getting paid, but after every three-hour shift I was taking home $40-60 in groceries, and sometimes more—there was the day I took home 20 lugs of peaches that had gone just a little too soft, but they were perfect for making jam. I've thought about signing up to volunteer with the food bank in my current town, but they require getting the jab, so forget that.

It's just a fraternity prank, right?

When I was in college I got food stamps for working on campus (work study). I never really used them, so at the end of the month I would take my housemates to the grocery store (a girl from Micronesia and a Japanese girl), and tell them to buy whatever they liked for a feast. That was a blast.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 74982074

Re: How To Live On $30 A Week (for food)
I’m a snob for quality food and will pay higher prices for fresher, more quality food. I discount shop certain products but organic milk, grass fed cow butter, quality beef, organic berries.

Food is a pleasure I enjoy preparing and eating and sharing with others. Some weeks are busy and I forgot to make the space I need in my schedule to enjoy all that surrounds meal prep, sno quick, cheaper and easy foods are a go to. Mostly, I regret being mindless and cheap about my food.

But, I also am not big on social appearance and drive an older beat up car and don’t dress in fashion. I’d rather spend on better food.

my one meal of the day has been 5 strips of bacon and 3 eggs and about 3/4 cup milk with espresso shot. water or tea or more milk and coffee for hydration, but of dark chocolate, some jello.

that's less than $30 a week, but sometimes graze a bit, especially to get electrolytes lost from heat/sweating.

bacon and eggs keeps you from being hungry, for me it lasts the whole day.

Eggs for breakfast

Salad with tomato onions a few croutons blue cheese in olive oil dressing your choice of meat for lunch

Quality can of sardines with or without some sriracha butter made with clarified butter for snack, or some pecans

Sausage and peppers for dinner or pulled pork

Keto friendly, if not keto then add more crouton in the salad, and a French toast slice with blueberry and butter on top with breakfast, possible organic banana with lunch or snack

Eggs- heat up pan with some oil in it on just under a 4 heat setting (low medium, varies), crack 4 eggs in the pan and cover it for 3 or 3 and a half minutes depending how you like your yolks. I know cooking eggs still scares some people. This is it. Might have to mess with your temperature setting but at 3 minutes the yolks should ooze in mouth.
