This is because Jesus IS God. He manifested himself on Earth to complete His process of exemplifying to His children what is expected of them to be with Him in His Eternal Kingdom when all of this is said and done following the Tribulation.

There is no rapture. Those of us who want to reign with Him in His kingdom must go through the suffering and willingness to die to have our prepared souls captured by him as they leave the bodily vessels behind.

Anyone who believes they will be "raptured" away from said suffering and death first when Jesus Himself was not, is not thinking clearly at all.

Jesus will accept your repentance and forgive your sins- but that is only the first step to His Salvation. 3:21 makes it very clear we must be able to overcame just as He overcame persecution, suffering, and death

Don't pin your eternal being on my words...but.. I THINK that Jesus IS the gatekeeper, but I'm not sure you have to actually be a Christian to receive eternal life. Let's say you live where Jesus isn't the accepted "religion", but you live a good life compatible with the 10 commandments. I'm thinking that he will probably give you a wink and motion you through.
