Aluminum canoe.
Anyone own a vintage aluminum canoe?

What kind?

How have you accessorized it?

What do you predominately use it for?

I have an original 15' Grumman double end canoe. [link to www.oakorchardcanoe.com (secure)]

It's an original with the thicker .050 aluminum hull. It is in great shape! I predominately use it for fishing.

To haul my canoe, my pickup has a raised canopy with aluminum tie down brackets affixed to the top. This is how I haul my canoe.

I also have a vintage adjustable motor mount bracket that came with my canoe, as well as two different size wooden paddles.

Grumman sold the company and in 1996 they started making thinner aluminum hulls on the newer canoe's, from the new manufacturer, from .050 thickness, to .040. (*)

Anyone know when Grumman switched to thinner Aluminum?

I want to add an easy anchor crank system without drilling new holes, but can't find anyone who has done a video or write up on it.

I have some ideas using an Attwood Anchor Lift System to get a good anchor system easily affixed, so that I can remove it and/or assemble it easily.

I think I can install it without drilling additional holes, but would need to attach it to a plate or steel flat bars (possibly wood) with rubberized foam backing and than affix that to the stern or aft point using clamps and brackets. Same with attaching the crank system to the gunwale sidewall.

On the bow and aft points there is a small aluminum utility loop affixed with a bolt for tie down or tow line that run through the hull already. I think I could piggy back off of that using J hook bars, to attach at the bow and aft point to hold it in place, with a clamp system toward the interior.

I already have two 8lb mushroom weights. Also have some steel folding stadium seats with rubberized footing that can be sat on, folded or with seat back up.

The need for back support can't be overstated when out on the lake for a day.

I also will soon be purchasing a newer 5 speed Min Kota 30" 12v trolling motor for it, to replace my ancient three speed model, which doesn't troll slow enough for fishing purposes at it's set speeds.

I currently hook my electric trolling motor up to a 100Ah Deep Cycle AGM 12 Volt Battery which fits nicely tucked under the aft aluminum seat.

When anchoring a canoe, it is important that the anchor lines are in line with the canoe to prevent side to side drift or the risk of capsize from side wind. For this reason, it's important that you make sure the canoe is anchored in line, into any predominate wind.

Anyone outfit an old aluminum canoe for fishing?

What mods have you made and how does it improve the overall functionality and ease and enjoyment of use?

Can anyone recommend any vintage accessories made for aluminum canoe's that I might consider adding?

I have a neighbor lady who has an aluminum canoe hanging in her garage. It was her husbands who has been gone for quite some time. It is a Grumman. I wondered what it's value would be? I used to go fishing with my neighbor and he had a Coleman Scanoe. It had a square end and we had a 5 hp outboard on it and it was super fast.

Op, I once had an 18' Grumman with the 1929 manufacture plate on it and factory sky blue paint on the inside.

Bought it on craigslist for 200 dollars and sold it for 1000 because I was moving across country.

Big regret selling that thing. It had the flat end at the back for mounting a motor.

In good condition, about $800.00 to $1000.00.

I purchased mine several years ago for 600.00. It's a 15', but prices are on the rise, because the aluminum ones are much more resilient than the plastic composite ones.

I am considering getting one like that too, if I can find a decent one for a decent price.

I never did more than paddle down the slow creek in mine but I could tell that it was a sweet boat with lots of potential.

I use a 17' 'mad river' plastic one now and I love it. It's thick plastic like a municipal trash can and only weighs about 75 pounds. Very durable.

I haven't been in a canoe since my youth though often in the Florida ICW's. I didn't like Aluminum. For me, fiberglass only. And I worked with boat builders..back then if it wasn't wood it was fiber.

The only thing I don't like about aluminum is how loud it is when you bump against it with a paddle or when sliding stuff around like a cooler.

I don't fish but I'd think fish wouldn't like that.

With any canoe, but especially an aluminum one, don't ever go swimming from it unless it's securely anchored! The slightest gust of wind will catch it and it will blow away faster than anyone can swim!

Nice!

If anyone lives in the New Jersey area, there are two pristine vintage aluminum canoes for sale by the same owner. New old stock that never went in the lake selling for about $850.00 each.

If I lived in the area, I would snap them up in an instant!

I seriously doubt you have a canoe with 1/2" thick aluminum. Maybe .050 but no way .50.

I like the look of the smoker craft ones.

However, a Grumman.....can't be beat as long as you don't abuse it.

I saw someone at the boat launch with an aluminum canoe once, that looked like they parked it on a golf driving range.

I found a modular, full size outrigger system I could add to it, so that I could make it into a flat barge system if I were to install aluminum cross bracing and platforms, but they manufacture and ship it from Florida. making it a pretty penny to get it to where I live.

That, with a Bimini top, would be the ultimate set up. Highly stable. You could even pitch a tent on it if you wanted.

it was a pitch black night, and we were approaching the
wooded shore in a canoe. i was in the back. some low
hanging tree limbs brushed by me and at the same time i
heard something land at my feet. it made slithering noises.
knowing that snakes can drop in boats from tree branches, it
made me panic. i jumped straight up in the air, and landed
squarely on my feet which were balanced perfectly on top of the canoe siderails. you would think that it is impossible, but i
know it can happen because i did it. i turned on my headlamp and looked down.
a small perch had jumped in the boat and was moving his tail
fin back and forth making a slithering noise.

you made me think of this, so i thought that you might like
the story.

ps: i put a 5hp gas motor on one of those wooden motor mounts
and it worked fine. i don't think that i would get a bigger
motor that that though.

I looked into those. They run about $70.00 to $200.00 depending.

There is a lake I use to fish nearby that no longer has public access, other than to portage in. The state still stocks it with fish, but the resort where public access use to be granted closed the gate years ago. It really sucks... I use to fish that lake for years, and now it is tied up in negotiations that don't seem to go anywhere for acquisition of the resort or other bordering land mass to return it to public use.

It's been nearly 14 years since the public has had reliable and easy access.

I wouldn't mind having a 13' canoe, just to cruise around the lake with for using paddles, but If I keep wanting more canoe, I am going to need to build a warehouse to store them all....lol
