Re: What's your earliest traumatic memory?
Well i think i was about 9 or 10, when just me and my Mum moved from the family house into council house, remember having some night terrors, the walls definitely become hellish like moving scorpions or looking like spinal cords. Some years later i had several sleep paralysis episode.
I watched American Warewolf in London at a similar age, that disturbed me no end for quite a while thereafter.

My dad went to work and never came back. No body was ever found, even today, 40 years later, we still don't know if he's alive or dead. I was 10 yo when it happen.

Remember this was in 1982. I guess if someone had to disappear like that today it would be a lot harder. He was a delivery guy for auto parts. They found the company truck parked in a local shopping center 2 days later, no sign of him anywhere.

He didn't even bother picking up is pay check (my mother had to go get it) and no activity in his bank account after that date either.

What pisses the most is that he left my mother with 3 kids (10,9 and 7 yo boys) without any kind of revenue. Back then, most mothers were staying at home. My mother was 29 yo back then.

Police did research for years, never found anything.

I was 3. Had an ear tag. I remember being held down on the hospital bed, lime green walls, and the med team shoving a black mask over my face to put me out.

Re: What's your earliest traumatic memory?

I was about 4 or 5 year old little girl. I was out walking the neighborhood by myself as usual in my white undies, because that was normal in the mid 50s. Two boys about 6 or 7 came over and pulled my undies down and pointed at my crotch and said, “See, I told ya, she doesn’t have one.”, then ran off. I ran home traumatized and told my Mom, who laughed.

True story and it so embarrassed me so badly and I was so ashamed that I no longer wanted to go out and play for years. I also hated boys for years, but by the time I was a teen, I got even with the boys by making them like me and suddenly breaking up with them for no reason.

Simple shit done to kids stay with them forever.
 Quoting: Texas Best

This sounds like the penis envy joke.

The next day when the boys made fun of her again, she said, " My mommy told me as long as I have one of these I can get one if those any time I want!"

Re: What's your earliest traumatic memory?
I'm not sure which came first.

When I was in kindergarten or 1st grade I remember getting clobbered and bloodied by a 6th grader on the playground. I didn't know him or even know why it was happening. He knocked me out.

I also remember numerous fights between my mom and my drunk dad. I remember him throwing her across the room when she tried to leave.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 82039327

Yeah, I had a similar experience in the 5th grade and it was even more bizarre.

A bigger kid probably 14 or so no one at my school had ever seen before ran up and attacked me for no reason and then went and jumped in a car. He was a raunchy, filthy looking fucker that looked like he lived under a trailer somewhere.

I know it could not have been anything I had done because it was my second day of school in that town.

I hadn't even had time to make a real enemy. Not to harp on it or anything but this was a reoccurring theme in my life, older boys or men and sometimes women attacking me for no reason I could establish, it is almost as if some organized group was stalking me in some bizarre scheme

Being taken to fairs and carnivals as a small child (5) by my drunken father and being publicly berated by the bastard for crying because I could not get on a ride due to older children beating me to carriers. For some weird reason the creep got a kick out of attacking me in public? He loved crowds watching him do this or he loved being the center of attention! This made me shy for the rest of my life. To this day I hate being the center of attention.
Please don't do this to a child.

Most dudes won't remember it but your circumcision was fucking brutal.

Also, its a stupid religious tradition with no purpose except funneling energy to that religion. Gross.

Re: What's your earliest traumatic memory?
My mother had undiagnosed scitzo and bipolar. I was 3 and my Dad took my brother to a soccer game and I was left alone with my mom. I did something to upset her, not sure what I did, probably typical toddler stuff. She got really mad and picked me up by my ears and held me me up in the air that way saying she was going to kill me. It hurt really bad, it felt like my head was going to explode.
 Quoting: DelusionsOfGranduer

I know what that feels like. My mother was paranoid schizophrenic and was as mean as the devil himself. She not only would pick me up by my ears she would choke me up against walls and lift me off the ground with her hands wrapped around my neck a foot or more while screaming and spitting in my face. She even tried to kill me by chasing me with a butcher knife when I was about 5. Fired a gun at me when I was 16. Daily beatings and stampings were an everyday occurrence. It was hell on earth. But i survived and blessed to still be alive.

Needless to say I didn't really have a childhood... I feared that woman until the day she died which was only a couple of years ago.

My first memory was of me only 3 yrs old.

Mother had married a man as mean as she was. I was in bed, it was dark and I woke up when the light came on. My mother was Standing in the doorway watching as her new husband started beating me in the face and body with his fists.

When he was done he left the room. I was crying and asked my mother why he did that. Her response was because I was sucking my thumb in my sleep.

I even remember the next morning I was covered in blood and so was my bed.

My entire childhood was similar.

I'm not a victim though. I'm a strong independent woman. I'm glad I grew up the way I did. It made me strong.

I look around today and see weak people that fall apart at the most simplest problems. I would rather be me. :)
 Quoting: Ambulance Girl

That’s really rough when you have not only one person abusing you, but two. Thankfully my Dad didn’t abuse me but he would work at least 12 hour days, pretty much any excuse to not be home and deal with my Mom.

That’s crazy she fired a gun on you. My mother was definitely similar, she never fired a gun on us but she threatened to whenever she was “in a mood”. Once my brother and I got older (taller than her) the physical abuse stopped and it was all emotional/verbal abuse.

Was your mother triggered by holidays or birthdays? I could never celebrate my birthday and days like Christmas would set her off the deep end. My most memorable Christmas was when I was 12. We came home from a family Christmas party really late at night, and at midnight she declared that “Christmas was over”, proceeded to knock over the Christmas tree, opened the sliding door and dragged the tree out in the deck. She followed it up with throwing the presents outside into the snow and trying to light matches and toss them on the tree to burn it. As if that wasn’t bad enough she told my brother, Dad, and I that she was going to shoot us all with a shot gun. Later on in the night my brother woke to the smell of gas, she had lit every burner on the stove and blew out the flames letting the gas leak in the house. All I can say is, thank God she didn’t light a cigarette in that time period because we all would have gone up in flames.

I definitely think experiences like these make us stronger and creates a great amount of patience.

My mother passed away a few years ago as well. She had an aggressive form of cancer, only lived for 3.5 months from diagnosis till death. She really suffered. I kind of feel like, had she not been such a nasty person, she wouldn’t have had it so bad.

Glad you made it out ok despite having a shitty childhood. We can either grow from this stuff or let it hold us back.

I was between 2-3. I was running down the sidewalk with a toy shopping cart and slipped, fell, and knocked my front upper teeth through my bottom lip. I remember my mother calling a neighbor to take us to the dentist or doctor because my mother didn't drive and my father was at work. I don't remember anything after that.
