American citizens can never 'own' land in Mexico. They can only lease it for 100 years. The Mexican government can steal their property any time they want to.

I know someone who got together with 6 of his friends and got all the permits to build 6 houses on the beach, 'bought' the land, got all the permits, and the local government was so happy they decided to build their homes there...

After they finished building and thought they had a permanent paradise, the government thugs evicted them with no due process, and 6 months later, the Mayor and his cronies were all living in those houses.

I get why people would see Mexico as a good place to flee to but I think they're not looking ahead. First of all, 99% of them don't speak Spanish and even if they did they will ALWAYS be looked upon as "gringos" with money. Mexico is one of the murder capitals of the planet, despite its extremely tight gun laws. If and when TSHTF in Mexico the American expats will be the first targets of the cartels and non-cartel criminals.
Did I mention that Americans aren't allowed to own property in some or all places in Mexico? They definitely can't own land near any Mexican coastline. Meanwhile Mexican illegal aliens own homes all over the USA.
