It's the time of year when stupid little baby birds come down from the nest and have no clue what to do with themselves.

Actually, yesterday I had to switch lane to avoid a bird sitting on the road.

They’re eating berries that have been fermenting in the hot sun, and are a little drunk. Happens every year.

Very weird! Yes, we were just talking about that this weekend- twice I had to slow way down and switch lanes to avoid birds just standing in the road.

I saw this thread and thought I've been seeing them just standing in the road. They fly right as they're approached, but you are pretty much right on them before they do.

Re: Anyone else noticing birds acting weird?
Actually yes I have.

Lots of birds will just sit there while I’m walking my dogs and it’s almost like they are playing a game of seeing how close the dogs will get. Never seen it before like this.

Also noticing a ton of dead birds. More than usual for hot summer

Yes. I have been able to walk up to them just sitting in the road. Stay there for a few and take off. Maybe not same type of bird you said in thread but yes to everything else+

Re: Anyone else noticing birds acting weird?
the birds in my area are flying 9 bird formation aerobatics in beautiful sequences .
they come past straight and level then pull up into a cuban eight , seamlessly into a stall turn with half rolls .
then a formation lomcevak (precision manoeuvre) .
then all nine come by line astern executing perfect sixteen point rolls .

Y'all are actually leaving the basement. I'm amazed by your courage to go outside in this terrible pandemic. It's still covid, right? Anyway, birds sound normal, you're all just noticing them more.

Indeed...

[link to image.cnbcfm.com (secure)]

Speaking of which... would Tom Cruise post an image of Tom Cruise's double, for fun, as an inside joke, and/or as a prank?

I think he would. ;)

Back to topic...

I learned something interesting the other day: Never assign anything a probability of either 0 or 1... because 0 and 1 aren't probabilities to begin with.

[link to www.lesswrong.com (secure)]

So... I'll start with a null hypothesis (from my local frame of reference of a complete ignoramus about a new subject) of 50/50 (probability of 0.5), and then modify that probability as new data comes along.

So far, I haven't seen any majorly weird behavior of birds... in real life.. but I did see a indescribably weird one (involving a pigeon and a sparrow in an... Ouroboros-style behavior) in a dream last night, so... somebody's testing their own null hypothesis (with probability of 0.5) that synthetic telepathy is real?

Again?

How many people do you need to personally verify something before everybody just starts assuming that it is real (without any personal verification)?

That's a genuinely valid question, mind you.

It's how all religions work (including scientific religions, since all science, eventually and inevitably, turns into religion... because of people's laziness to personally verify anything)... but really shouldn't work like that.

My point is: You don't need me to verify anything for you. You can do it all by yourselves.
