As with any fiat currency, the backing of the currency is peoples faith that their estimate of it's projected buying power will remain stable or increase.

Kind of abstract, but that's how i see it in a nutshell.

What you have with the u.s dollar is partial rejection by certain world powers and a competition of economies.

Because faith has waned, those at the top need more currency to sustain their buying power and keep the trickle down into the economy and everything turning over.
