Oil comes out and pools on the ground here in east Texas. There are wells here that have continuously produced since the 1920s. Oil is very shallow and easy to reach, it is pretty normal to drill a water well and hit oil instead.

When you fractionally distill oil it separates it by the atomic weight of the compound, so the lighter, thinner more volatile ones like heptane and hexane (the main constituents of gasoline) are boiled away fairly fast, the heavier compounds on the bottom will range from fuel oil like used in furnaces and at the end of the process, asphalt tars.

A fractional distillation tower is not necessary to produce small quantities, it can be produced very easily. Look at the illegal stills set up in the jungles in Columbia and Venezuela, not exactly high tech but it will run in a car just as good as Exxon because the process to create gasoline from oil is not that complex
