Why you need a land line - do not use a smart phone for multi-factor authentication for important accounts
Turns out that you can use a land line for your multi-factor authentication. instead of receiving a text message you can receive a phone call to your land line for authentication. Land lines are not vulnerable to SIM swapping because it is wired to your physical phone in your house.

SIM swapping
is how hackers can change the passwords to your financial online accounts - ask me how I know.

How Does SIM Swapping Work?
SIM Swapping is a process where hackers exploit your phone’s two-factor identification system.

The scammer will start by calling your mobile carrier and pretending to be you. They will report that their SIM card was damaged and request that their carrier activate a new SIM card that is owned by the scammer.

They then use data that they already learned about you to beat the security questions in place. People who do this put in a lot of preparation work and are normally skilled hackers.

my secret questions are impossible

even a hacker with years of time to spend would never be able to figure them out

I learned that your secret questions are your real password from an incident with my ex who did some really bad things when he lost it

he knew all my secret questions at the time, stuff like favorite actor, etc.

they’re all very personal now, nobody but me knows them

don’t freak out and change your password without changing your secret questions

make up your own questions when you have that option, stuff like the color of hair of your first grade teacher, where you drank your first beer, what it was, what car you took your driving test in, etc. make them highly personal like this
Forgive your enemies, it messes with their heads.

No going there.. I don't care... and its not big enough an issue. I like a smart phone... Not going to pay the extra cost and this is silly enough. Police et all can hack your land line...

and I don't have any "special" accounts.. to worry about. and I pay all my stuff online on the computer.

Welp, anyone who uses the muti-factor authentication process in order to cheat and hide the affair (like my husband did), deserves to have their account/s hacked.

I use my land line for all my phone calls. The only time I ever use my tracfone is if I'm traveling somewhere - which I rarely do anymore. My friends and family were trying to convince me to get a smart phone - I told them to save their breath, it's never going to happen. My daughter wanted to get me one of those Alexa things and I told her I never want that cia/nsa bullshit in my house.

Had naked pics of his ho and other compromising info on there that he tried to delete, but all of that got stuck in the trash bin for a period of time (I think it stays for about 28 days or so before it deletes 'forever.)' That part wasn't protected.

Thats how he got caught. Got lazy and didn't think anyone would see them there in the trash bin.

Park a number at a place like "number barn" - its super cheap - $2 a month , and you can get SMS and listen to a greeting for that price
I originally parked a cell phone number there because my employer demanded I get a new phone and use a number they owned. But then I found I could use the old number better where it was. I leave a greeting telling peolpe the "right" number to call to reach me..and I give out the parked number whenever asked. Robocalls etc -- just dead end as no one listens to the message. Contractors etc, only call the second number when they are really interested in getting the work and so on.. and all 2 factor goes there so no SIM to swap.

Re: Why you need a land line - do not use a smart phone for multi-factor authentication for important accounts
It's a good point. A cheaper way would be to have a 2nd SIM and never give the number out to anyone other than the bank etc. Just use that for your authenticating stuff.

It's a good idea these days to have a public and private number and email.

Thank you and yes, he did ruin everything. 27 years of marriage down the drain. Really never thought he would do such a thing.

Feels like someone is punching me in the gut non-stop. My heart has actually hurt at times. Horrible.

Anyway, as shitty as it all is, I too am glad I found out. Now I can attempt to move on with my life.

Like most things on the internet, the security sector was created and intended to help people but got compromised by bad folks along the way. Now a lot of it is used for criminality/evil.

Sad.

Technology can be great, but it also has its drawbacks as well.

There are times where I just want to unplug everything and go back to the pre- cell phone, computer, etc. era.

Maybe one day!
