I was in the Officer’s Club in Goeppingen, West Germany, in 1973. Was drinking a beer sitting beside a major.

Noticed Ordnance Corps insignia on his uniform and asked him where had been.

Ft. Dietrich he said.

Then, he told me about an incredible briefing for Prez Nixon where he had been present.

The Ft. Dietrich scientists were happily briefing the new prez on their latest bio weapons. One was pneumonic rabies that would spread through the air like flu and that current vaccines could not prevent.

Nixon, a shrewd lawyer, asked, “What happens if it escapes the lab?”

They assured him that this was not possible.

He retorted, “You just had equine encephalitis escape and it killed thousands of horses in addition to 26 humans. Once again, what would happen if it escaped the lab?”

The scientists looked at each other and one replied, “It would probably kill all the mammals on Earth”

Nixon then used salty language to describe their judgement and ancestry.

He wrote an Executive Order to destroy all offensive bio weapons.

I have learned that this order was violated a LOT since that time.

Yup. That is the number one doom for humans. Some idiot modifying a deadly virus that kills us all.
