First you grow peas from seed that you have inoculated with the necessary rhizobia. While it might be present in your soil, they don't do well without it, so might as well put the pea seeds into a bag with rhizobia and shake them together.

When you're done harvesting the peas, lease the roots in the ground. Usually we just plow the plants under. In mild climates the peas can be grown in winter and turned under to release the nitrogen into the soil during the summer planting season.

Save some peas and repeat. We like snap peas, picked young before they plump up, but of course you have to leave some to maturity for next year's planting. Put the pease you save, after they are dry, into the freezer for at least 6 weeks to kill any critters, like weevils, that have invaded them. The critters lease a very small hole where they entered. Don't plant any peas with such holes if you find them. That's it.
