The historical meaning of slaughter is the killing of an animal. Its contemporary use as a synonym for murder is low-brow and incorrect. I know people's use of it is meant to sound dramatic, but it's wrong and the implications are dehumanizing. Furthermore, "slaughter" does not imply any guilt of another party, while MURDER makes it explicit that a wrong has been done. The more recent use of slaughter when referring to humans being killed was in context of mass deaths in war. It white-washes the guilt of warmongers. Now society has devolved further and has began using "slaughter" as a synonym for murder generally. The word is MURDER. Last Edited by everLearner on 05/29/2022 12:58 PM |
