I was failing miserably the whole year. I didn't have a clue. At the end of the year, when I knew I had to pass regents, etc., I took a night class to learn it. I learned a whole year of chemistry in just 12 hours. Yup. The teacher of that class was a great teacher! Got a B on the state regents. Not bad for someone that had learned nothing from 10 months of a clown teacher. Bad teachers can cause tremendous anxiety for students. He was one of several bad teachers I had had. Our whole education system needs to be changed or dismantled. It's a joke. And we're paying for this garbage through taxes. Enough said. |

Anonymous Coward (OP) User ID: 79261622 United States 05/28/2022 11:33 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Unfortunately public schools only give you one book on the subject you are to learn. The best way I have taught myself is studying multiple books on the same topic. What I don't comprehend from one book, I seem to understand from another. Quoting: MrCoolone As Confucius says “By three methods we may learn wisdom: First, by reflection, which is noblest; second, by imitation, which is easiest; and third by experience, which is the bitterest.” Good Point. I have found that a lot of Math books are poorly written..for the reason I stated...Math is conceptual and trying to explain it in words, I found a lot of the authors of math books fall into circular statements. But think of all the problems caused by what you are saying...some person reads a book and then thinks they are an expert, without ever considering learning more from different viewpoints. |

In high school, I found the chemistry book they issued to us was a joke. It was long and drawn out. Very few were able to learn from this text. I found a book "Chemistry made Simple". Then, I found myself correcting the teacher on numerous times. |

Typically, there is no real way to learn to draw and paint masterfully without sitting in a room for a long time with a bunch of people that are better than you are, including teachers. A teacher can take 20,000 hours of study and practice and distill it down into a few words that can speed up understanding and the pedagogical process drastically. Granted, a lot of people teach but can't "do"... but that's not what I mean. Studying under practicing professionals at the top of the game is invaluable... sort of like an apprenticeship. Quoting: Moonpie 79261622 Every single thing I've learned has been from books. And I guess I can say some videos now in the computer age. But...a teacher in a school? That was a complete waste of years of my life. If they had given me the book and told me what chapters to read and given me the test, I would have had no problems. In Math, I think teachers actually hurt my ability to learn because Math is conceptual and some halfwit using language to explain it is of no use. I say this because I think its time to get rid of the Public School system, which is a 19th century 'progressive' idea. It was meant for non-diverse societies where it was assumed every child was (and should be treated) exactly the same. Why does some like me have to listen to a 2nd rate turd babble for 45 minutes about something I could just read and take a test on. I can only learn from my mistakes and so far I haven't made any. Someone once gave me a Bible and told me to take it seriously. I told them to get fucked, have you any idea of the life I have lead? |

He would sneak us out of the school through a break in the fence and we would go to the beach for an hour! "Build a sandcastle - that will be your grade". Best teacher ever! That is why I would like to see an open school environment based upon free markets. I personally could have read and studied online and taking the required tests. Some people need a teacher. Some people are in schools and they don't want to be there and that is to the detriment of the others that are there.
