Quoting: Anonymous Coward 83374338 I do something kind of similar to that. Specifically for the active compounds. Flavor profile may not be for everybody but I actually find it palatable. Cayenne, black pepper, coriander, cumin, tumeric, garlic, ginger, oregano, basil. No salt. Higher ratios of coriander, tumeric, and basil than the rest. Bee balm and mint would be interesting. |

What Are The Most Useful Dual Purpose For Cooking And Healing? I'd say most dual purpose overall is salt/pepper, garlic/onion (fresh or powered); but that's just me. We seem to use a lot of it. For oils, we just use olive oil and some Sesame Oil w/ginger for the stir fry meals. After that we use a lot of different herbs, a lot (like around 18). If we didn't grow them once a year and dry them and save them, we wouldn't be able to keep buying them at the prices they want for one container! One thing I do like that seems like a good can use overall for just about anything is, ok don't laugh (you proper Chefs out there) but Mrs. Dash (various types) is pretty good, I really like the "Garlic & Herb" stuff :) |

I have course sea salt. Is it just as bad as table salt? Got black peppercorns, can't stop eating them raw. Used to eat a piece of garlic a day for my R.A. but didn't seem to help. |

I'm growing some Mountain Mint this year, I think, if I can get it to sprout :) I'm gonna try it out. |

What Are The Most Useful Dual Purpose For Cooking And Healing? Been living under a rock for years as far as these go. Only ever used salt, pepper and BBQ Seasoning. Quoting: FRED BUZZER Now bought a spice rack and selection of spices and started growing a few herbs in the garden but don't know what I am going to do with them. Just figured they would be very useful in a SHTF situation for home remedies. Have researched some but I am sure the clever buggers on here have some hard to find tips... I am expecting some Steak Sauce tips... didn't include the A ONE as I seem to remember that phrase being banned here. Can't think why it should be. Burgers? Famous Dave's Burger seasoning is really good :) If you want to splurge $ (and not grow it). Herbs good on burger (IMHO): Thyme, oregano, parsley, sage, basil, chives, onions, garlic...can grow all. Not so sure how to make a good sauce. |

The real cinnamon is a good thing to add as well. That does depend on where you live. You can't just grow it in your garden. Cilantro and the seeds(coriander) expells heavy metals and unwanted thing out of the body. All herbs/spice has a purpose. Some will fuck you up. Sage will either raise your blood pressure if it's high already and vise versa. Save your seeds |

What Are The Most Useful Dual Purpose For Cooking And Healing? Lemon, lime and orange zest have not been mentioned yet. I grate the dark surface of the peelings and dry them for later. Celery seeds are great for gout, bunions and tendonitis. Chew a few seeds a few times a day for few days and the pain goes away fast. You can sprout celery seeds. They also make a great ingredient in fried chicken coating, like KFC flavor. Fennel seeds are good to prevent gas, baby colic and indigestion. You can toast them in a dry skillet for a chrunchy after meal aid. They also make a good pizza and pasta sauce, I love them in lots of things. I have a big garden and lots of herbs. I make my own blends for different foods and moods. A dash of vinegar, spoon of molasses and a drop of liquid smoke are also good additions with a bacon like flavor for beans and soups. That is when I also add my dried orange peel. |
