I talked to a guy when I was much younger that lived in Phoenix his whole life he was about 70 at the time. He said before air conditioning they would sleep out on the porch at night when it was really hot. They would hang sheets and wet them and the wind would blow through and cool them. They did the same with a fan inside during the day.
