Biggest booster to make an older PC run faster is a solid state drive.

If you're still using your O.S. on a hard drive, You can exspect a 30% (or more) increase in overall performance by purchasing a SSD and cloning your hard drive over onto it – Easy to do and samsung SSD’s even have cloning software you can grab online for free.

Agreed, there are few reasons to run Windows any more.

There is now more messing around with Windows 10 than there is to install Linux, for example Linux Mint. Linux Mint (like other distributions) usually come in three variations. Each variation is much alike though each have slightly more eye candy and greater number of applications for computers with greater resources. Below list is for higher spec. PC to older lower resources. A Good (10 year old) Windows 7 PC will run the Mint Cinnamon very well. An older Windows Vista or XP PC with 2 - 4 GB RAM would be best with Mint Mate or Mint Xfce.

Mint Cinnamon Better Window7 or Windows 10 PC
Mint Mate Older Windows7 PC (12 years old)
Mint Xfce Last of old Windows XP models.

Get any old junk out, and find a friend who is prepared to try installing Linux.

There are many things that can be done to make a struggling Windows 10 PC to work better, but it requires a lot of work. Microsoft do everything to ruin the Operating System if you start installing all the unnecessary garbage, Microsoft Store crapware applications and live tiles, spyware, antivirus, firewall rules, malicious code removers etc.

Microsoft are again colluding with PC manufacturers to maintain their position, now in the Office Application and Cloud Services while rndering older perfectly decent hardware unusable.

Try getting someone to install Linux on old abandoned hardware. You may have another never going back "red pill" moment.

Yes. That is literally the only program you need. Number one slowdown these days is from some third party antivirus garbage that decides to run in the middle of a gaming session or flat out refuses to let your game even run.

If you ever get infected with anything I suggest you format the living shit out of that HDD and start fresh.

The only way to be shure.
