The emphasis on animals may be because those in the know (and who are not setting the world up for a fall - I know, slim chance) are almost certainly desperate to keep MPX from becoming endemic in animals in the West, as that will lead to mutations galore compared to human hosts. Pets are one thing, and can be dealt with, but if it establishes a foothold in the population of wild animals, the potential exists for an extremely virulent strain to emerge. This strain could be every bit as as bad as smallpox, and with that zoonotic cohort acting as a reservoir, it will, unlike smallpox, never be eradicable.

Why the big worry about this but not covid?? Covid has been shown to infect numerous species and already is in the wild deer population.

For one thing, it already has the potential to be considerably more deadly than Covid ever was (Covid had a CFR of less than 1% across the general population, while MPX as it stands now has a CFR of 1%-10%), and there is a chance that the back-and-forth between species (animal to human to animal to...) could lead to increased virulence, with perhaps up to 30% CFR, which is the rate that smallpox exhibited.

We were able to eliminate smallpox by means of vaccination because there were no non-human reservoirs to reintroduce the disease. That is not the case here. MPX is endemic in animals in Africa, thus it cannot be eliminated without wholesale destruction of the animal kingdom there, and if it becomes endemic in animals worldwide the likelihood that it will mutate to a high level of virulence is greatly increased.
