Anonymous Coward User ID: 78209377 United States 05/13/2022 03:55 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Vultures gathered around a carcass are called a wake Lots and lots of people believe that vultures don't hunt live animals, but in my experience, they absolutely do.
Other people say, "yeah, they're opportunistic hunters and will grab whatever is small enough, but mostly they eat carcasses." But with my eyes I've seen plenty of buzzards eating carcasses and only a few vultures ever do so. I have seen them go after chickens and heard numerous cases of them going after weak newborn Livestock.
They usually have 5-7 birds working together, but sometimes there is much more, however when they are truly hunting in formation I've only ever seen them do this with 7 or less in a hunting group. I believe it's called a committee.
They have a scout of 1-3 birds and they roam a grid like area at about medium height. They won't cast their shadow at this height. They will meet up and switch grids sometimes. When they've spotted prey they will shoot up high into the air this alerts the others. Then the ones that were very high come down but they stay on the other side of the area where the prey is between the scouts and them.
They fly very very low to meet up with the scouts who are doing a low pass. The low pass will leave a shadow so if they can't snag the prey safely here they will just make it run.... but the other vultures using vegetation as cover will be ready to snag whatever it is the scouts are chasing.
People say they don't have the talon strength or the beak shape to do this usually and they're just not correct. Keep your eyes up if you've got pets or Livestock cuz these birds are hungry right now and they absolutely work together. |

A lot.
Almost exclusively.
But of course, being in Michigan (the road kill state) there is no shortage of road kill here. |

They were having a stand off in the middle of the road both alive but something was wrong since the opossum was out in the middle of the day. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 83234523 But buzzards are different than vultures. I didn't know this until i looked it up a few years back. The two names are interchanged frequently tho |

Same size as Great Blue Herons, which also cruise my neighborhood.
My wife and I were just talking yesterday about whether they might go after our new puppy.
I told her I didn’t think so, that they just ate carrion.
Glad I read this as I didn’t know they ate living creatures. |

They're black with white tips on their wings from the ground view anyway. But they have feathers on their heads but still look ugly and wrinkly in the face. They do low passes over us when i have my little dog outside so i don't go far from him or any chickens I chaperone across an open field |
