Any HVAC guys in the house?
I have a refrigerant leak. There almost no more. There's a crack in a line inside the unit and the repair guy says he needs to torch it and seal it up and then pump the system with refrigerant. What would you charge or expect to pay for this?

Last year I did this.
$175 labor
$100 for freon.

He must have lied to me he said the refrigerant was like $50 a pound or something. Quoted me $450 which seemed fair but he's talking like he's done me some huge favor

How old is t he system, probably a three ton , is it a heat pump or do you have a gas fired furnace, is it an old 22 system or a 410?

Re: Any HVAC guys in the house?
It depends on how old the unit is. Older ones use the refrigerant that was discontinued so it's really expensive now, like many hundreds to refill the whole thing.

Ok it’s a R410 system then, probably be better off replacing the coil in the air handler, 410 operates at much higher pressures and is causing coils to split and leak all over the place.

Itemized could be pretty expensive through a company.
$90 diagnostic fee
$150/repair
$200-$400 to evacuate and replace LL Filter drier
$60/lb of refrigerant.

You can evacuate and fill with propane(R-290) if you set the pressures right. Of course, it's illegal, but it will work well and it's cheap.

also it uses 35% less power because the head pressure on the highside is lower (Under 200 LBs)

Depending on the tonnage of the system. R410A is running 90 to 150 bucks a pound.

If it is a Carrier coil throw it out and never use a Carrier coils ever again. They are junk. N frame design plus drain pan in the middle of the coil reduces your cfm performance.

Get a A frame coil and add a TXV.

500 to 1200 bucks if you replace the coil.

Re: Any HVAC guys in the house?
I helped a friend out looking for a leak on a small system.

We thought that it was a leak in the evaporator. Installation was 2 years ago.

Upon further review we went under the house and pulled the insulation off a section of the suction line 3/4"

Low and behold never seen this before. We pumped the system up 450 psi of nitrogen. Just a 4" section of the 3/4" had microscopic pin holes. Multiple holes that you couldn't see...

We only could see it if we wet the line and seen a tiny mist in multiple areas with the flashlight.

We are replacing the refrigerant lines... Never seen this...

Dad had a old torch with a vacuum hose you used the hose around fittings and if your flame glows green you found a leak

Re: Any HVAC guys in the house?
Yeah it is bad stuff. Before recovery machines. We would just release the charge to change out the compressor. I never cut the line I just unsweat the lines. Everytime I'd get that nasty phosgene gas as it is with R22. Not sure what R410A is but probably the same or worse.

If you get that burning shit into your sinuses and lungs. You step away and breath heavy to get it out of your lungs. That shit can kill you. R22 and flame = phosgene gas not mustard. Not kidding.

I imagine R12 is way worse as it is way more loaded with chlorofluorocarbons

I believe that all the recovered R22 is used after the fuel systems on geoengineering.

Have you ever seen a compressor explode with a full charge? It shoots out this lingering white cloud and expands like crazy. I call it the death cloud.

It's ironic that it's legal to charge a system with the potential to damage the atmosphere of our planet but heaven forbid an accident with a flammable refrigerant damage lives or property that an insurance company would have to pay out a claim on.
