A state-owned public transport operator in Paris, France, the Régie Autonome des Transports Parisiens, has pulled out 149 electric buses from its fleet after two of them spontaneously exploded within the same month.

The RATP decided to temporarily retire the electric vehicles after the second explosion occurred around 9 a.m. on April 29 near the François Mitterrand Library, according to reporting from the local newspaper Le Parisien and a RATP news release.

A video by VIXX compiling the viral videos showed smoke emanating from the top of the bus, where the battery is located. The smoke gave way to an explosion and a shower of sparks that covered the vehicle’s mid-section and nearby areas.

i guess they weren't LIFOPO4? I would think it would have to be that kind of chemistry to be allowed on the road so this kind of thing cant happen

Now they're going to have to add a foam component to all fire engines in order to put out these electrical fires. Spraying water on them doesn't seem like a good choice to me.

They don't "explode" per se. It's called thermal runaway. Essentially, it's what happens if the two opposite charged elements come into contact with one another. There's MASSIVE potential energy crammed into those packs. Obviously, they're moving a bus and passengers. When thermal runaway is initiated, there's no stopping it. It has to burn out. Absent a lab environment, there isn't much known about how to contain the "fire", "explosion", etc. Thermal runaway. It's a concept I think any potential EV owners should be well aware of, and take into consideration. I've resolved to myself to not be burned to death in my mode of transport. The Batt packs need to be fore or aft of the cockpit. Spring loaded to "jettison" the batts if they start a "thermal runaway". I'd feel a lot better about electric single mode transport if I'd seen an advertisement like that. It's all irrelevant though really. The energy density of electrons as compared to hydrocarbons is negligible.
