Many look at the world, as in one of three states.

Woke, Awakened, or Sleeping.

We will concentrate on the 'Sleeping' since the other words are ambiguous.

Well, there are many creatures here on Earth that never actually sleep in our sense of the word.

To 'Sleep' is not all that clearly defined simply by it's definition. Sleep across species is a very, very different thing.

For instance.

All Mammals who live in a water environment...ie, Whales, dolphins and such, sleep in an interesting Hemispherical brain shut down called:

unihemispheric sleep patterns, where they literally sleep with one eye open. One hemisphere sleeps the other navigates, comes up for air, and an eye always open looking out for predators.

It is fascinating.

Sea urchins
Jelly fish

The Alpine Swift:

Yes, even birds... "During their migration, they had been able to spend up to 200 days in flight. Possessing characteristics much like other marine animals, including being able to sleep on one side of their brain while using the other side to focus on flight and predator detection."

How do you sleep?

Even we, as in most terrestrial mammals, sleep with our eyes closed but our ears open.

The slightest form of a different sound in our environment will wake us up in a second with eyes now wide opened.

Bullfrogs:

do not go into a sleep state, but they do go into states of rest throughout the day.

Ostriches:

Are funny creatures. Believe it or not, they actually sleep standing upright with both eyes open (much like the platypus) for about six hours at a time.

Giraffes:

"...this large mammal has adapted to be very skimpy on sleeping needs. They take brief naps that last just five minutes during the day and sleep 30 minutes a day, thereby topping the list of animals needing the least amount of sleep..."

Horses:

"...Incredibly, with just two hours of sleep a day, horses will get by, while domestic horses go up to three or five hours and younger animals require more sleep than humans. In paradoxical sleep like giraffes, they sleep for very brief periods, about 15 minutes, and they can even sleep standing up or lying down..."
