Probably because of their high liquidity and universal acceptance when they need the cash. You can buy cheaper rounds and bars, but they are harder to liquidate, unless they come with assay serial numbers.

I agree with OP. If someone is simply stocking up on the precious metal silver, why pay the higher prices for a specific design? Silver is silver, so just buy the cheapest silver rounds available. Its the silver precious metal content which should be important, not the design which costs a premium!

Lots of people just follow the herd without even knowing really what they are doing. And they pay a premium doing so.
