Sounds like something else I've tried before

“When you use the drops it starts to kick in in about 15 minutes. It peaks in about an hour and then depending on how your body gets rid of it, it lasts for six to ten hours.”

The FDA has approved eye drops called Vuity that make reading up-close easier, which is welcome news to many who rely on reading glasses.

Yale Medicine Ophthalmologist Vicente Diaz said as people age it becomes harder to see up-close.
It has to do with a part of the eye called the lens.

Possible side effect, "loss of vision".

No thanks, glasses and bifocals are just fine. I'll stick to gambling with a deck of cards.

Ain't it the way. Every drug ad these days tells you that an adverse side effect is to cause the same illness, or injury it is supposed to prevent.

Like Prolia, the new Fosomax. Supposed to help prevent osteoporosis and brittle bones that snap. I just so happened to listen the other day that an adverse side effect is "unusual thigh bone fractures". Yeah, and that's about the biggest bone in the body, and if can break, then what hope for your ribs. Bout of coughing? Oh Dear, looks like you've got broken ribs.

I will avoid any and all offerings of Big Pharma.

The drops have warnings with some rare retina detachment, iris inflammation, and cornea issues so talk to your doctor. Other side effects are also possible.

The drug is not covered by insurance, so a 30-day supply costs about $80.

This medication is not new. It’s literally less than $1 per bottle cost and it costs $80 out of pocket. It’s the same stuff the eye dr used to constrict your pupils. They found the right percentage “dose” to help us old farts see without readers. Patents it for $$

It's not that great. We've already trialed it on some of our office staff. They stopped using it already. Dryness and irritation was reported. Night time driving not advised. It can increase your risk for retinal detachment.

Pharmaceutical reps have been pushing us to prescibe this too. Just recently approved by FDA. Nasal spray for dry eye.

Once again. Our staff with dry eye trialed it out. They already stopped using it. Non stop sneezing and throat irritation.

Re: Newly approved eye drops help people see close up without glasses
They're lying by omission on that site. The normal shape for the eye's lens is close to spherical. This is its resting shape and that shape focusses at infinity, with respect to the retina. When you relax your eyes, they naturally look into the distance. It takes effort to focus up close.

Muscles attached to the lens are able to distort it so it focusses close up. As we age, the lens becomes more stiff and inflexible, mainly from calcification.

The muscles also weaken with age and pretty soon the lens can't be distorted to see up close any more.

Unless this crap makes the lens change to be able to focus up close, it's bullshit. Even if it did that, we wouldn't be able to focus at distance, while it was active.

Whatever it achieves must be more like a contrast enhancement to the vision. This would imply that it affects the retina more than anything else. Chemically mess with the retina's perception?

No.

Ophthalmic pilocarpine is used to treat glaucoma, a condition in which increased pressure in the eye can lead to gradual loss of vision. Pilocarpine is in a class of medications called miotics. It works by allowing excess fluid to drain from the eye
