in early 2000s an estimated x40 flare hit earth and it didnt do anything at all, flares are a joke unless cmes are involved that are accelerated by one. and dont always come with one. you dont need a flare at all for a properly aligned cme to destroy earth, a flare regardless of alignment requires a cme to even potentially be a threat so flares are redundant

X-CLASS SOLAR FLARE: A big and very active sunspot complex emerged over the sun's northeastern limb yesterday. It has already produced an X1-class solar flare. NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory recorded the blast on April 17th at 03:34 UT:

A pulse of X-rays from the flare produced a strong shortwave radio blackout over southeast Asia and Australia: map. Mariners, aviators, and ham radio operators may have noticed unusual propagation effects at frequencies below 30 MHz.

The explosion almost certainly produced a coronal mass ejection (CME). The US Air Force detected a Type II solar radio burst shortly after the flare. Such bursts are produced by shock waves in the leading edges of CMEs. Fresh data from SOHO are expected to confirm the existence of a CME, probably not Earth-directed.

Meanwhile, get ready for more flares. This sunspot group has been active for more than a week, hurling CMEs and plumes of hot plasma into space from its location on the farside of the sun. Now it is turning to face Earth and shows no signs of slowing down.

That sunspot formation is incredible for this early in the cycle. Peak of cycle 25 isn't expected till 2025.

Happens on a daily basis

The flares themselves cause radio blackouts. The resulting CME's are what helps propagation, usually happens days later IF the flare was aimed at us.

OP: Dude, cut the bullshit fear-mongering. That flare was only briefly an X-class and is NOT heading for Earth. And there's just as great chance -if not greater- that no further flares will erupt from this rotation cycle as there is that one will.

I was flying in space - looking down at Planet Earth. I was flying over USA / and it was NIGHT. I could see all of the "lights" on (in the populated area) - it seemed like the East and West Coast were the brightest - but other areas were lit up too /Texas Great Lakes Region, etc...

Suddenly there was a white "flash" that was set off (in the upper atmosphere of earth). I was ABOVE this "flash" looking down.

This "flash" caused 1/2 the planet to go DARK. It was EAST COAST all the way to Texas that went dark. (It was like USA was split in half right snack in the middle).

All lights were out on the East Side of USA.

Looking down at this - I knew this was man made AND natural.

I was puzzled how that could be?

And woke up.

Boom boom out go the lights
