We are not talking about daisy farms up in Canada. Corporate Raiders like Carl Icahn have been doing this exact thing here in the US for decades with impunity. Just watch the video in the tweet. Icahn talks about firing 12 floors of unproductive employees. Granted Musk probably does not have enough shares to exert this kind of influence yet. But he does have a seat on the board of directors and a big soapbox.

When the company allows people to work from home for 2 years as a policy and a new shareholder with 9 percent shows up and that person is the single biggest share holder, the remaining still control the 90% and basically, that means they decide, not rocket boy.. If THEY decide to give the office to the homeless, then it can happen. It's just how it works man and there are no time cards. Those are salaried workers. It's not a fucking assembly line.

What are you talking about? The US is a “right to fire” country, unlike Canada and all of Latin America. You can fire anyone, for practically any reason that you like, without warning and there are no severances.

The only things you can’t do are: fire for discriminatory reasons (skin color, age etc), fire people in a union with whom you have a labor contract, or fire people with whom you have an employment contract (unlike most countries, US employees don’t usually have contracts).

Now, as the 9% owner he can’t fire them directly. He needs the CEO to do that. But he has a lot of sway and it’s likely that most other shareholders would band together with him. So if the CEO won’t shoot the people that he wants to shoot, he can fire the CEO and appoint one that will.

These are twitter employees. They don’t have a union. Most won’t have contracts. Even worse, most have options that aren’t vested so they’re going to be butthurt when they get fired before they vested.

Musk is an idiot most of the time but he’s nailing this one.

You are right they can't sue, but Musk doesn't have the power he is claiming either. At least for now. He is restricted in the percentage of shares he can acquire until 2024 and he has agreed to a passive investor role, for a seat on the board. He has influence, but he can't make broad decisions. There is also eleven other members of the board, that still have say.
