Hit a pole or similar narrow obstacle head on at high enough speed and airbags become much less relevant to outcome. More so for unbuckled jackasses like this guy here.

Greatest risk to the driver comes in those seconds between acceleration and impact when intent becomes obvious. If I'm the gunman I stop or drastically slow your attempt by putting one in your head the second I hear the engine revving or note an abrupt course change.

But most in that position would realistically just freak out and brace for impact. So overall this is still a good strategy as it significantly increases survival odds.
