User ID: 78258400 United States 04/05/2022 11:13 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | SOLAR CYCLE UPDATE: New sunspot counts from NOAA confirm that Solar Cycle 25 is racing ahead of the official forecast--and the gap is growing: Sunspot counts have now exceeded predictions for 18 straight months. The monthly value at the end of March was more than twice the forecast, and the highest in nearly 7 years. The "official forecast" comes from the Solar Cycle Prediction Panel, a group of scientists representing NOAA, NASA and International Space Environmental Services (ISES). The Panel predicted that Solar Cycle 25 would peak in July 2025 as a relatively weak cycle, similar in magnitude to its predecessor Solar Cycle 24. Instead, Solar Cycle 25 is shaping up to be stronger. In March 2022, the sun produced 146 solar flares, including one X-flare and 13 M-flares. Auroras were sighted as far south as Colorado (+38N) and Nebraska (+42N). Multiple shortwave radio blackouts disrupted communications on ships at sea and airplanes flying over the poles. If current trends continue, April will be even businer. Stay tuned. Solar flare alerts: [link to www.spaceweather.com (secure)] 2025 is the predicted peak of cycle 25. This could be one of the most active cycles since the Carrington event. With the earth's weakening magnetic field, that could leads to some serious problems, particularly in northern latitudes. Your electrical panel is not likely to be damaged, it's sensitive electronics are the most susceptible. The problem today is almost everything has a microchip, including electric meters. All can be shielded in a metal box/cage know as a "Faraday Cage", but knowing when to do that and have on hand is the question. If there was a serious threat, I doubt the govt. would notify the public for fear of the panic. |

ALL data centers are shielded, servers are in special grounded cabinets, people get a fucken life. . There are many parts of our grid that aren't sheilded. The issue really boils down to frequency of the electricity on an AC system. A CME/EMP can cause localized failures in places that are near impossible to predict. So you lose a portion of what is currently under load. This can cause the frequecy to spike, which creates feedback to the generator systems. That are protected. This is why its necessary when the system is under peak load for them to do rolling blackouts. Look no further than what happened last year in Texas. The AC frequencies were getting to be very unstable. Necessitating them shutting down large swaths of the grid to protect generators and equipment. If you have sudden failures of systems. Its conceptually similar to your car. Say you're cruising along in 5th gear at 70 MPH. Everything is happy and can handle the load from the engine. And you suddenly shift it into first. I know what you're going to say. "Thats mechanical, the grid is electrical." Well yes that's true, and is kind of apples to oranges. Until you get to the generators, that ARE mechanical. And the amount of physical resistance they have is directly proportional to the amount of load thats on the system. They have to synchronize the generators when they bring them online as to not destroy the equipment. A sudden loss of load on the system can cause all sorts of unforseen issues. And suppose they could even shut down the grid in time. Bringing it back up is a challenge. This is called a "black start." Where at every station and substation, transformer, breaker and switch needs to be set and prepared to be brought back online. CMEs are a major threat to our grid. And to anyone paying attention. That little burning ball in the center of our solar system is starting to spit. Nothing devistating as of yet. But it has spit some nasty stuff before. Like in 1859... and it WILL again. Its only a matter of time. The question is when. // My definition of insanity. bool try() { return false; } void insanity() { bool success = false; while(!success) { if(try()) { break; } } } |
