Next up in the automotive realm....TIRES Get them now while you can (even if you don't need new tires yet), because scarcity and massive price increases will be here by summer. Bought 3 car batteries and 9 new tires so far this year. 4 more tires to go to get them all done. Prices are sky high but you gotta have them so what can you do? Pulling money out of my 401k now. Gonna get nothing I need but batteries and tires. Thanks glp for the financial advice. Copperpenny |

I was going to buy from walmart the $49 battery that now sells for $109. Only...It's now $149.00 Quoting: Pilgrim001 That's right. A cheap car battery from WM is One Hundred Forty Nine dollars. Somebody better tell brandon not to piss off China so my battery won't cost so much. The last time a car battery was 50 bucks was 1971. BS. Bought one a year ago for $49 from Wally World. |

We're just saying expect prices on those items (and many other items) to skyrocket, so if you're close to needing needing new tires (approx. 5000 miles left on your current set), then you may want to consider getting them now. Because if you wait, you'll likely be paying 2x-3x (if you can find them at all) for them in the near future. |

THEY ONLY LAST TWO YEARS AND THEN LOSE CRANKING POWER. NOT WORTH IT AT ANY PRICE. Conversation at Walmart I want to use a deep cycle battery. "Sir, those are for golf carts and farm equipment." I think it'll be ok. Hope your alternator has a really good charge controller. PS. if anyone is interested, the best batteries are made by DEKA. made in Pennsylvania. There is no difference and no need for a better "charge controller". Batteries are simple affairs. They charge fully charge with 18 volts and will go to three quarters charged at 12 volts. Deep cycle batteries are just batteries that don't have the really thin lead plates of regular batteries. They last longer and are more resilient. They have less cranking amps for their size because the are built differently and have thicker plates and more room for the sulfur deposits that collect at the bottom. Same chemistry. Same charging voltage. Same regulator requirements. Add an electronic vibrational desulfider unit, and your deep cell batteries last 3x times as long... batterysaver is a good one... about $100 bucks. (if I had a dollar for everytime I've raised the hood and heard, "gawd, what a battery!") I used to replace the battery in my lawnmower every year or two, grew tired of it, used a little ingenuity and fitted a small car battery. Now, not so much. Quoting: JustmeTX Drying out is a major cause of battery failure. Rip off the top label and pry out the rubber plugs and you can top off the water level in the batts with demin or distilled water. Yes! New cars have a really high charge voltage, like 14.7 or .8, and that will dry a battery out, especially in hot climates. AGM batteries are only 98% saturated in the fiberglass mats, so as soon as they get used, they begin drying out and losing peak current. The target voltage/charge rate has been going up steadily over the years along with accessory load and presumption of short trips. For long life, a flooded cell battery should be charged at no more than 13.8 volts. Beyond that you are just boiling away the water. In days of GENERATORS,manufacturers provided (in service manuals) elaborate descriptions of how to diagnose charge rates either too low or too high for specific customers, according to their use of the car. Lower voltage target for hot climates or long distance drivers, higher voltage for old ladies who only drove twice a month, etc. But that was mechanical point-type voltage regulators, where you COULD adjust the voltage. New vehicles would be very hard to adjust to a lower charge setpoint if you wanted to. Giwani-Mek Translates as: Wandering Beaver Nothing shall be so certain as to permit confusion |
